with the music, you can tell that the original Romeo and Juliet has a classical music orchestra playing the music for them live, whereas Radio and Juliet the music is coming from recordings of a band. Also in Romeo and Juliet with the movements that were put to the music you can tell when they link together what is sharp and what is soft. In Radio and Juliet, the music and the dancing depend on what song is playing for what type of movement is to be executed. Costumes are also a big notice in differentiating the two pieces apart. In Romeo and Juliet, it is more old timey clothing choices where in the Radio and Juliet it is more casual suit jacket and leotard. Now to look at the choreography, which is completely different. The styles between the two are completely noticeable. In Romeo and Juliet, it is almost light and airy and the classical ballet moves. But, in Radio and Juliet the moves are sharp, distinct motions. Still has the basic ballet needs but is more of a contemporary approach to it rather than Romeo and Juliet where it is basic ballet across the board. On the other hand, with difference comes similarities.
Between these two pieces they share the common story line of Romeo and Juliet, even if they are two different names. Even if you had no idea about anything in the story of Romeo and Juliet in both pieces you can distinctly tell who is Romeo and who is Juliet by the way the dances move and interact on the stage. The basics of ballet knowledge are also shared between the pieces. The use of the stage is also big in both pieces. Even though Romeo and Juliet have a larger stage by the angle of the video all the dancers are in open spaces that fill the entire stage instead of staying in one spot. In Radio and Juliet, they seem to have a smaller stage, but the dancers sure use all the space they can to execute the dance moves to the best of their abilities. All dancers in both pieces show the similarities of being able to properly contribute their parts in the ballet even though they are two different approaches they all take on the task of their “character” exquisitely. In conclusion, no matter how many times a ballet is done and represented there will always be differences, but there is always going to be similarities. Between Romeo and Juliet (1940) and Radio and Juliet (2005) they had differences like music, style, and costumes. But they also shared it being a ballet and taking on their roles like true professionals. Even though they were done two different pieces and performed in different years, they both performed the story of Romeo and Juliet in a blissful way that the audience can
understand.
