Rosaline, is going to live a life of celibacy, “Why, such is love’s transgression. Griefs of mine own lie heavy in my breast... That, when she dies, with beauty dies her store” (Shakespeare, line 180 pg 382). Yet, when the day comes where Romeo and Benvolio sneak into the Capulet’s party, Romeo’s heart quickly sways for Juliet. “O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs… Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (Shakespeare, line 44 pg 393). There is no way that destiny can foresee what Romeo’s heart will do. If every action that we do is destined, then why does it seem that we can defy what seems the only answer that keeps coming back to us? The thing is, we control our destinies, no matter how it may seem. Such as in Romeo and Juliet, as the end draws near and Romeo find out that Juliet has “died”, Romeo fights against the destiny that keeps trying to make him lonely forever with the act of Romeo saying, “Is it e’en so? Then I defy you, stars! Thou knowest my lodging. Get me ink and paper And hire post horses. I will hence tonight” (Shakespeare, line 24 pg 468). Even as the lovers are separated once more and destiny tries to foil the Friar’s plan to get them back together. With everything that destiny tries to control, we are always the power over the wheel.
As for Romeo and Juliet, after destiny manipulating Romeo’s life time and time again, Romeo masters his own life in order to put an end to the tragedy. Romeo is completely shocked that Juliet “died” so he goes and kills himself so that he doesn’t have to feel alone anymore after destiny kept trying to force him to be alone. In reaction he goes and kills himself at the tomb where Juliet is laying mere moments before she wakes up (Shakespeare, pg.473). With destiny trying to fight for what is “meant to be” we always make our own decisions that sometimes go against what is wanted. Even though we seem to make our own decisions, there are always those people that believe in the force of destiny. A major thing point that people use to explain why destiny is real is because we seem to always be pushed toward some end goal. Although this is an easy out, it is far from the truth. Even if we are being pushed by destiny, we still control our lives. We can fight it and change it so that we go where we want. Nothing can completely take over our lives making us bend into it’s desire. In the end, destiny is just that, a force, nothing more. We can shape it and bend it to our will. As for Romeo and Juliet, they were two lovers that never were meant to be. With everything that happened to them, they fought for the wheel and steered their lives back to each other. Destiny may be pre planned, but who says
that we have to listen?
