Romeo and Juliet is known as one of the most memorable love stories, so the theme must be about love, or is it something else? In Romeo and Juliet, the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet fall in love first sight. They then try to hide their love from their families due to the major conflicts between them, but in the process, they both end up dead because they tried to escape their families’ grasp. Although the main theme of Romeo and Juliet is often thought to be about love, the theme is actually about the consequences of trying to change your fate. Romeo and Juliet’s deaths show that attempting to change your fate has consequences. As soon as Romeo receives the news of Juliet’s death, he yells to the sky, “Is it e'en so? Then I defy you, stars!” (5.1.24). In this quote, Romeo is yelling to a higher power, in this case the stars, that he will defy them and change his fate.
