In a classic tale taught to high school students every year, it’s no wonder why Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is as successful as it is. In Act I, Romeo is first demonstrated as a hopeless romantic dreaming for a woman, Rosaline, to love him like he loves her, although he knows it will never be. This is firstly demonstrated in Act I, Scene 1 starting on line 163 when Romeo describes how he’s “Out of her favour, where I am in love”. This line entails that Romeo believes that he loves the young Rosaline yet she doesn’t have the same feeling towards Romeo that he believes he has towards her. Through Shakespeare’s description of Romeo’s love towards Rosaline, it brings upon the question of whether or not Romeo loves Rosaline or simply just favors the thought of being in love. Another example of the fact that Romeo simply favors the thought of love is also in Act I, Scene 1 on line 187 when Romeo states, “Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs; Being purg’d, a fire sparkling in lovers’ eyes; Being vex’d, a sea nourish’d with lovers’ tears.”. This demonstrates that maybe Romeo doesn’t quite understand what love is, maybe he’s just read about. Although Romeo shows an understanding of the meaning
