SENIOR RELIGION – ROMERO REFLECTION

We have read about the persecution of the early saints in your text, researched various saints and watched the film Romero. The willingness of some Christians to give their lives for the faith did not end with the early Church. Research a modern day martyr or a current event that parallels the persecution theme we have been learning about. Include answers to the following questions in your reflection.
1. What scenes in Romero affected you the most? Why?
2. What inspires you about the early saint and the modern day martyr or current event you researched? Why?
3. Review the themes of Catholic social teachings. Which theme are you most passionate about? Why?
4. As an adult Christian, what would you be willing to do to stand up for your faith and support what you believe in? Begin this paragraph with “I believe…”
Please answer in paragraph form (one paragraph for each point). Your reflection should be at least one page typed.

All of the scenes in Romero had a big effect on my perspective. Throughout the movie, you see Romero go through a lot of change and evolve into someone no one thought he could be. No one wanted Romero to be elected, assuming he was a passive leader who could not do much good for them. One scene in particular that really challenged this idea was the scene when Romero went into the church that was guarded by the military to retrieve the Eucharist that had been shot at. After the soldier asked him to leave, but Romero ended up returning to collect every piece of Eucharist. Romero risked his life to do this and distribute it. This scene is when you see Romero have a major turning point. It was a crucial time for Romero to prove himself to the people of the church. He took this opportunity to risk everything for the people and prove that he was willing to go to great lengths for what he stood for. Just like Romero, the saint I researched stood up for what he believed. Saint

Throughout the history of Christianity, there have been many documents displaying stories of martyrs. The word ‘martyrdom’ is derived from the Greek martyrein, meaning ‘to bear witness’. In Christian understanding this has meant witnessing to Christ and to the Christian faith, even under pain of death at the hands of others. Most of these reports show martyrs as men, who demonstrate courage and honor in the face of those challenging their commitment to their faith. The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicity expresses the account of two female Christian martyrs in 203 A.D. and their personal reflections in reaction to their oppression. Perpetua’s memoir reveals an insight unto her life and how these two model—in the mist of persecution—striving towards freedom against their family blood and male oppressors. Gender roles have played a huge role in society as far back as written history goes. Perpetua was not confined by how she was supposed to act as a woman and took a traditionally masculine role in several situations. Perpetua did not value her femininity as strength, rather she shed it and deliberately masculinized herself to be strong; upholding the false idea that the only way to be heroic is to be like a man. This story reflects about beliefs of the early church in correlation with the experience of a female martyr and provides insight into how the male-dominated culture of that time biasedly interpreted the actions of courageous Christian women merely as characteristic of men: Women can take on a masculine role for the sake of God to the point where they “become men” in the eyes of Christianity.…
