THE ROSETTA STONE
The Rosetta Stone was the key to understanding Egyptan hieroglyphs and is one of the most precious and valuable treasures of British museum now. The Rosetta Stone is a stone which has writing on it using three scripts. The Stone was written in three scripts because when it was written, all three scipts were being used in Egypt. So the priests, government officials and rulers of Egypt could read it. The first was hieroglyphic which was used for documents about religion. The second was demotic (the common script of Egypt) and the third was Greek. Greek was the language which used by the rulers of Egypt. The Rosetta stone was written to be sent to three major Egyptian temples. The Rosetta Stone has written by a group of priests in Egypt to honour the Egyptian pharaoh. Bouchard was supervising the restoration of an old fort near the town of Rosetta when he found the stone and when he realized the value of it, he informed general Jacques-Francoise Menou and then the stone has send to Napoleon himself. It is called the Rosetta Stone because it was discovered in a small village called Rosetta.
After the French surrender of Egypt in 1801, the stone has sent to Britain and it is still in the British Museum in London since 1802 except for a period during World War 1. At that time, The Rosetta Stone has been moved to a underground location due to protect from the threat of bombs.
Lots of people tried to deciphere hieroglyphs for many years. But,it was very difficult to work out with the structure of the scripts. In 1814, English polymath and physician Thomas Young began to work on The Rosetta Stone text and he succeeded in providing translations within a few years. Young has has a big contributed on deciphering the ancient Egyptian
