ROY LICHTENSTEIN
In the city of New York a future artist was born. Roy Lichtenstein. He was brought up in a middle class Jewish family. His father was a real estate broker named Milton and his mother, Beatrice Werner, was a homemaker. His interest in art started as a hobby in school. In 1939, when he was in his last year of school he went to summer classes at the Art Students League of New York. Under the Tutelage of Reginald Marsh he worked and improved in his artistic skills.
Roy Lichtenstein lived for 74 years. He was born on 27 October 1923 and died from Pneumonia on 29 September 1997. Roy completed about 250-350 paintings in his life. One of his major works included the ‘Drowning Girl’. The artwork was completed in 1963. He appropriated the artwork from a DC Comic book called ‘Secrets Hearts). Another one of his famous works included ‘Whaam!’, which was completed in 1963. In his later works he did another appropriation of Vincent Van Gough’s ‘Bedroom in Arles’. Lichtenstein’s version was completed in 1922. It was one of his more modern artworks, which were quite different to his earlier artworks interpreted from DC Comics.
He worked in his studio in New York and created his amazing artworks from there. Later in 1970 he bought a previous carriage house and built an art studio there. Lichtenstein’s first exhibition took place at the Carlebach Gallery in New York. In 1961 the Castelli gallery, in New York, began to display his works. One year later in 1962 he had his first solo show in the gallery. Later in 1964 he exhibited his work in the ‘Tate Gallery’ in London. He was the first American to exhibit in the gallery.
