Offsides is a concept used in a variety of well known sports. If you 're one of the hundred of millions of people who watch the World Cup every four years, then the rule of “offsides” can be pretty confusing. It is definitely one of the most important concepts in the game of soccer and it is also very important in sports like football, ice hockey, field hockey, and rugby. After you read this essay you will feel pretty knowledgeable about the rule offsides.

Back in very early nineteenth century sometimes offsides would be considered when a player is just in front of the ball. One of the first written rules of offsides was found in an early nineteenth century book at a university, it is defined as “If the ball has passed a player and has come from the direction of his own goal, he may not touch it till the other side have kicked it, unless there are more than three of the other side before him. No player is allowed to loiter between the ball and the adversaries ' goal” (“Offsides: association football”). In soccer, if there was no rule of offsides then a player could just stand by the goal without any defenders on you and wait for your team to pass the ball to you and then it’s just you versus the goalie. In football, a player could easily leave the line of scrimmage and run down field with no one on him. That player could receive a long field pass and be free to go down to the end zone with no problem. Offsides in rugby is when a player is in open play and no player can be ahead of him or else he is considered offsides. Ice hockey offsides is when a player enters his offensive zone before the puck does, and same with field hockey. When players are in offsides position they have a hugely unfair advantage to the other team and that is why offsides is a very important ruling and will continue to be a very important rule in

    One rule that the NFL has implemented that creates a disadvantage for players is the Roughing-The-Passer rule, also known as the Tom Brady Rule. ESPN writer, Jeffri Chadiha states, “Defenders who have been knocked to the ground must get back on their feet before tackling the quarterback” (Chadiha). They call it the Tom Brady rule because Tom Brady’s injury in the 2008 NFL season influenced the NFL Competition Committee into enforcing this rule. On the contrary, this rule places a disadvantage for defensive line players because if an offensive lineman knocks or cut blocks a defensive lineman to the ground, they cannot simply lunge at the quarterback and bring him to the ground with them. Defensive lineman must get back completely on their feet before tackling the quarterback. This wastes time and gives quarterbacks the upper hand. If the NFL Competition Committee is implementing a rule restricting defenders from lunging from the ground to tackle the quarterback, they must also create a rule restricting offensive players (linemen) from cut blocking defenders. This is the main reason why defensive linemen end up on the ground.
