Offsides is a concept used in a variety of well known sports. If you 're one of the hundred of millions of people who watch the World Cup every four years, then the rule of “offsides” can be pretty confusing. It is definitely one of the most important concepts in the game of soccer and it is also very important in sports like football, ice hockey, field hockey, and rugby. Back in very early nineteenth century sometimes offsides would be considered when a player is just in front of the ball. One of the first written rules of offsides was found in an early nineteenth century book at a university, it is defined as “If the ball has passed a player and has come from the direction of his own goal, he may not touch it till the other side have kicked it, unless there are more than three of the other side before him. In soccer, if there was no rule of offsides then a player could just stand by the goal without any defenders on you and wait for your team to pass the ball to you and then it’s just you versus the goalie. In football, a player could easily leave the line of scrimmage and run down field with no one on him. That player could receive a long field pass and be free to go down to the end zone with no problem. Offsides in rugby is when a player is in open play and no player can be ahead of him or else he is considered offsides. Ice hockey offsides is when a player enters his offensive zone before the puck does, and same with field hockey.
