Russia's Not a Safe Country to Host the Olympics: Debate
Ermeena Fayyaz; Matthew Potgieter; Dewmi Herath.

1st Speaker – Ermeena Fayyaz
Brief Introduction:
Ladies and Gentlemen it is my honour to welcome you to our debate “that Russia is not a safe country to host the Olympics” and being the opposition team we strongly disagree with this statement. We believe the Russia is a safe country to host the Olympics.
The key word being safe. By safe we mean that Russia is a well-protected country to host the Olympics.

Team line:
Our team line is ‘Trust the facts, not the Hype’

What each speaker will discuss:
We would start out debate by talking about the Security of Russia for the Olympics. After that that our second speaker, Dewmi would talk about the process of determining the next location for the next Olympics as well as the media hype and finally our third speaker, Matthew would conclude our debate.

Notes for rebuttal:
Football game in Russia (FIFA World Cup in 2018)
Gay rights
First Half of the Case:
SECURITY
1. In order to ensure that the Winter Olympics held in Russia are safe the Russian government have drafted 37,000 police and security officers to handle the security in Sochi, which is way more than the security drafted for the Summer Olympics which were held in London in 2012. The Olympics, which were held in London, only had 10 thousand police men, where as Russia has 37000, police men.
2. Not only this but also that according to an article in the National Geographic Magazine written my Cathy Newman stated ‘things go missing. We drop a glove, lose a watch misplace glasses. Sometimes they reappear, are appointed by others or stay lost. East London is like that”. By this quote we can tell that even though East London was not a safe country to host the Olympics they are still held there.
3. If something didn’t happen in the Summer Olympics held London with only 10

During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, World War I and World War II occurred followed by The Cold War. Countries entered the Olympic Games in hopes of finding peace through friendly competition, while leaving their individual problems behind. In document 1, Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic movement in 1892 thought, “Reduction of the chances of war helps promote peace”. This quote means that when the countries came together for friendly competition at the Olympic Games, wars weren’t taking place. Pierre de Coubertin also believed that the Olympics Games helped promote peace and as founder, he wanted everyone to feel a sense of unity within them. The author of document 6 shares the same belief. The Soviet Union committee believed that, “a consistent and peaceful foreign policy” had a dramatic influence on the 1980 Olympics. The Soviet Union/USSR believed this because in 1980 the pressure on Soviet Union to end the Cold War was increasing. By hosting Olympic Games in 1980, USSR was eager to show their will to come together with the world in a peaceful manner.…

The Cold War was a ‘war’ fought from 1947 to 1991, a battle fought with tension and subdued hostility, in which most of the world was affected. The main ‘participants’ in this war were America and its allies, against Russia and the aligning countries with that nation. Instead of fighting the war straight up, the countries played it out in more subtle ways.1 Politics have been involved in the Olympics for a long time2, and the Cold War was partially fought during the Olympics also. The water polo game in 1952 Melbourne Olympics boycotts in the 1980 Moscow games and also the 1956 Helsinki Games all have proof that the Cold War has to do with some of the events that happened during those games.…

With all this going on, Humane Society International wrote to Russia’s President Putin and urged him to prevent the killings of dogs, knowing that President Putin is also a dog lover. All he could say was that Sochi has more stray dogs than their other cities, and that only the unhealthy dogs were being killed. Which was true, the strays were found inside sports venues and have even wandered into the residence where our Olympic athletes were staying. So a man who had made his…

"The Olympics are not a 'small sacrifice!' For four years we have been working for this, and we have made huge sacrifices for our sport. We have given up college education, secure jobs, and happy families all for these games. Do not dismiss what you are doing to us as a small sacrifice for the greater good. Remember that in doing this, you are taking away our lives. You are destroying us." Anita stopped for a moment and remembered where she was. The courtroom was no place for emotional outbursts. Embarrassed, she sat down. The courtroom became deafeningly silent.…

Sports and politics intersected when the Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan towards the end of 1979. Political figures such as President Carter called upon the U.S. Olympic Committee to boycott the Games. More than forty countries called off their participation in Moscow's Olympic games in 1980, including Germany and the USA. Ultimately just eighty-one countries participated in the games held in Russia's capital. Not only did this issue effect the 1980 Olympic games, but as well as the 1984 Olympic games. The Soviet Union along with about a dozen allied states, refrained from participating in the sporting event held in Los Angeles, California. The Soviet Union’s “reasoning” behind their lack of involvement was caused by concerns that not enough security was provided for Olympic athletes at the games.…

Also, because of all the negative ramifications of the terrorist attack on the Olympics in 1972, the Olympics is now adequately prepared for terrorists; hopefully, there will never be another terrorist attack on the Olympic games. Sadly, since the 1972 Munich terrorist attack was not ever foreseen to occur, it could have of not of been really avoided. However, there could have been a better organized rescue mission; which, could have resulted in saving the nine living hostages and could have ended not so tragically. Just imagine how the families of those hostages felt as they heard what unfolded during that years Olympics; also, forever they will remember how horribly the rescue mission was executed. Tragically, terrorism will still occur in many settings and is very prevalent in the world, now more than ever before. Hopefully, there will be less terrorism and violence in the world soon; especially, to never seen another tragic event take place like the attack on the Munich…

When people say we should not keep the Olympics because they do not have all of the sports in the world I disagree. I disagree because based on this picture https://wiredchop.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/clip_image008.png it shows how the Olympics keep growing. The Olympics are growing vastly. If they keep growing at this pace soon we will have everybody’s sport. Yes, they do not have your sport know, but they most likely will later. Also, your sport may not be in the Olympics, but there are national teams and stuff like that which is basically the same as the Olympics. Have you ever wanted to go to the Olympics? If you have then you would not like if they just took it away because they do not have like one or two…

Sochi, Russian resort between the Black Sea and the Caucasian mountains, has been chosen to host the next 2014 Olympic Games. Lots of optimistic promises are done, those Games are supposed to be Innovative, celebrating, sustainable and inspiring. It is the chance for Russia to change its image. Marketing is very impressive and efficient; the image that Sochi gives is a really beautiful and strong one. Nevertheless, this decision is really polemical; Sochi doesn’t seem to be as perfect as it is said. The weather is not adapted, there is no equipment yet, everything has to be done and this costs a lot of money. The population is not listened by the government, political power seems omnipotent.…
