Russia is a country with a voluminous number of different religions. The largest religion is the Russian Orthodox Church, which has traversed a hard and tragic road. The beginning years of the Soviet Union was the toughest for the Church. In 1918 the government separated religion from the state and school, as a result the church lost their right to own land. A special committee was accumulated to remove them from their lands. The troubles continued until the 1980s when great strides where made to repair the relationship between the church and the state. In 1988 alone, over 1600 religious communities were set up. In 1990 laws were passed allowing freedom of religion which negated most of the restrictions on the religious communities. Today in Russia there are many different religions. The top two religions in Russia today are Russian Orthodox, which has over one hundred and forty million people, and in second is Muslim which number at over ten million. Russia has a long tradition in high quality education for all citizens. The education system consist of two groups which are general education and ongoing higher education. The general education last nine years where graduates can do a three year secondary general education. Graduates of secondary general education can apply entry to higher education. Russia’s higher education system is very similar to the American degree plans. The biggest difference in the higher education between America and Russia is the cost of higher education. Russia’s higher education on average is only 2000-8000 dollars a year which is dramatically less than the cost of education in the United States. The education of a region helps forms the culture.
