SPE 222 Reflection
While meeting with my advisor, I was informed that I still needed to fulfill my social behavioral and cultural diversity credit. After receiving this information I spent the next hour scouring the available classes at ASU that fulfilled both of these credits. Their was only one class that met the credits, and fit with my schedule. This class was SPE 222, or Orientation to Educating Exceptional Children. Initially, I was not very enthusiastic about having to take this class. However, I have been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy this class and its content. The class focuses on various types of disabilities, and how to create an inclusive learning environment for these students. Learning about different disabilities and their causes

In the reading reflection you have to choose three quotes. After choosing three quotes, you have to connect each quote to a personal experience, another text, and a real world situation. This format forces you to delve deeper into the topic. As a result of having to connect the quote to other sources the reading becomes more relevant to one’s personal life and the world around them. Learning about individuals with disabilities has made me more compassionate and tolerant of people who are different than me. Almost everything I have learned in this class has been relevant to my life, or to problems plaguing the world. For example, in this class I was made aware of the people first language. In my opinion, everyone should be educated on the people first language. The people first language puts the individual before their disability. A person is not autistic, rather you introduce the person first, and then follow by saying that they have autism. This change in wording has a tremendous effect on individuals with disabilities. Being educated on topics like this, is extremely important and is information that will be valuable in both my professional and private life. To conclude, it is Dr. Gehrke’s teaching style as well as the class content that has made Orientation to Educating Exceptional Children my favorite class of college so
