The old scouting theory is one standard statistic that had traditionally been used as a standard for success. According to the old scouting theory, scouts wandered out and examined players throughout the country. The method does not pay attention to the statistics but instead it bases its decision on the five tools which include; speed, arm strength, quickness, hitting ability and mental toughness (Lewis). Each scout is taken to a scout school and is given an idea of what is examined in particular aspects of baseball, for example, arm strength among others. In arm strength, for instance, scouts are instructed to find players who can …show more content…
However, the sabermetricians do not see it as a good measure of players’ abilities. Sabermetrics is the numerical and statistical examination of baseball records. Sabermetrics oppose the theory due to the fact that their actions and instinct for the most part, failed to correctly identify players who were effective but did not look the role.
Qn. 2: Identify and discuss a new statistic created by the sabermetricians as a true measure of player’s abilities.
Sabermetrics was created by the sabermetricians with the pure goals of identifying useful means of hitting and pitching performances. According to sabermetricians, a hitter should be scored by his strength to make runs for his team. From an empirical analysis of an extensive collection of the team hitting record, the sabermetricians came up with the following procedure of forecasting the number of runs made in a league. According to the number of hits, walks, at-bats, and aggregate bases registered in a season. The formula delineates two vital issues in scoring runs in baseball. The measure of hits and strolls of a group reflects the group capacity to get runners on a base. The quantity of whole bases of a group reflects the group's capacity to move runners that are as of now on base. The above-expressed formula …show more content…
If the player makes it to the next base without the other team can throw the ball to the base and tag him then he is safe. Players can make runs by stealing bases hence propelling a time to a win. Although stealing base can net more runs Oakland’s A’s disagreed with it because it has dire consequences than its benefits. One of the core reasons is that for one to steal a base, it requires speed, deception, timing and coordination to make to the next base. If a player makes it to the next base after the opposing team has thrown the ball then, the player is out. Hence such incomplete stolen bases breaks teams speed and destroy its chance of getting a win. Also stealing bases distracts the batter since it can make a batter attempt to hit a pitch that he would naturally not swing at to let the runner steal a
