Sacco and Venzetti

After World War l all the countries that were in the war were going through an
adjustment period to try to get back what they lost in the war. Vladamir Lenin, the
Russian Premier, started Communism in Russia. He loved the idea of Communism and wanted to spread it around the world. Because of this America went through a period called the Red Scare, where Americans feared the spread of Communism to America.
Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Venzetti were two Italian immigrants who were tried and put to death for a double murder and robbery in South Braintree Massachusetts.
Because of the Red Scare and many other factors these men were wrongly accused and put to death.

America Sacco and Venzetti, who were immigrants and anarchists, had very little chance of being granted a fair trial from the start. Normally your political affiliations arenʼt admissible in court, but in this case they became a huge issue. As the trial went on this prejudice carried through until their conviction.

Before the trial they tried Venzetti for a previous crime of a failed robbery. This
wasnʼt a conventional method and was rarely done in the Massachusetts courts. He was found guilty of this crime and it was detrimental to the murder case. Not only was he now a previously convicted felon he refused to take the stand to defend himself which was a red flag for everyone. He was sentenced to 10-15 years which was
unreasonably high for a crime in which no one was hurt. This sentencing was a glimpse into the future for the murder case that was coming up. This wound up greatly affecting
Sacco as well as Venzetti because since they were tried together Sacco was kind of penalized for Venzettiʼ previous crime.

The six week trial concluded with a guilty verdict for Sacco and Venzetti. The only
evidence they had against the men was the fact that they had guns at the time
