Term Paper: The Right to Have Children
The right to have children is understood in very different ways and people’s ethics and values are put to the test each and everyday when they find out they not only must take care of themselves but the lives of another human being. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted this statement regarding the right to bear children “men and women of full age, without any limitations to race, nationality or religion, have the right to marry and found a family”[1]. This concept has been viewed in multiple ways and according to ethical theorists; they agree that no rights are absolute. However, it is said that for women at least, there is a fundamental privilege to have children. The right to life is a universally recognized right for all human beings. It is a fundamental right in which governs all other existing rights.
For children, the right to life is the chance to be able to live and have the possibility to grow, to develop and become adults[2]. This right comprises two essential aspects: the right to have one’s life protected from birth and the right to be able to survive and develop appropriately[3].
The right to parenthood can be a very delicate matter. Many people have different views when it comes to procreate and parent children. An example of this was a case about a man from Wisconsin who was placed on probation because he was unable to pay child support for all nine of his children. During his probation, he was to not father any more children unless he could prove that he could support his children and any other children he would bring into this world. This case has been in debate about the nature and limits of the right to procreate. In cases such as this one, where the supposed right has been overridden by other considerations, it is hard to decide whether the bet conceptualization of the case is in terms of a right being overridden, or in terms of a right which was non-existent in

There is a saying, “The right to swing my fist ends where the other man’s nose begins”, and this meaning that a person is free to have his\her unalienable rights without restraint, as long as he harms no other person or prevents someone else from exercising their own rights. Everyone is born equal and no one deserves less or more than what they are granted. An example would be slavery. All those people that were slaves back at that time had absolute rights. But, just because they were slaves it does not mean they are not considered to be persons.…

One of the biggest problems in society today is the arguments over reproductive rights. It is an issue that has been taken and used by members of the neo-conservative right in order to hijack the vote of citizens of faith. The difficulty of this issue is it is an easy knee-jerk reaction issue. No thought is needed, all a person hears is ‘killing babies’ and they suddenly become Republican. Little consideration is given to the mother, society, or the Bible these leaders supposedly take their inspiration from. I’d like to take a moment to show why it’s not a clear cut issue in the most basic argument used, the religious one.…

(The basic human right as outlined in "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights", Article 3 states that we have the right to life, liberty and personal security. The rest of the declaration enumerates all the rights one can think of. On the other hand, the classical teachings on the rights of humanity is very different from what we have now. From the example Mosaic law "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth", this principle means if you kill somebody, you too must be killed. If viewed today, this is not acceptable in the norms of the society).…

I believe that the child doesn't actually become a person with rights until they are affected by the world. Meaning that they don't become a person until they come out of their mother and experience the world for the first time. The question of when does a fetus become a child is very important in this debate. According to www.prolifeaction.org, Life begins at conception. It states that, "Medical textbooks and scientific works consistently agree that human life begins at conception." We don't consider an egg a chicken, or a seed a plant. If human life begins at conception then why does the Encyclopedia of Britannica say that abortion is, "The expulsion of a fetus from the uterus before it had reached the stage of viability (in humans the 20th week of gestation)."? 89% of abortions in the US in 1995 were performed 12-13 weeks and only 1% are performed after 20 weeks. Thus, making them not children yet.…

There is a current conflict over the topic of abortion and if the government should be involved with it. The two sides to this argument are pro-life and pro-choice. The individuals who are pro-life believe that you should not be able to abort a child from the very beginning of the pregnancy. They also believe that it is unfair to kill a child when there are couples out there who are waiting to adopt because they cannot conceive due to health reasons. The individuals who are pro-choice believe that you should be able to decide on your own if you want an abortion, and it should not be limited by religious or governmental authorities (“Background of the Issue” 1).…
