In the beginning of the novel, Stanley has a hard time accepting true friends. First, we see Stanley’s initial view on Zero. “He took his place behind magnet, in front of Zero” (Sachar 84) Here we can see how Stanley moves up the totem pole to popularity and barely acknowledges Zero. To continue, in this example of evidence we can see how little Stanley cares for Zero. “He needed to save the energy for people who counted” (Sachar 82) The other boys had put the mindset in Stanley’s mind that Zero is completely worthless. Lastly, the text states in Sachar 81 “I don’t like it when you read over my shoulder okay?” You can tell the tone Stanley is speaking in, he is obviously annoyed with Zero. Like I said before Stanley tries to please the other boys by being rude to Zero, which looks like will never change.

with Zero, even though they had their differences before. Stanley’s friendship with Zero helped him understand loyalty. “Stanley hoped the warden was watching them through her secret cameras and microphones.” (Sachar 156) This shows how they both enjoy being around each other and it makes them better people. The help each other out. Also, Zero and Stanley appreciate each other as seen here in Sachar 117. “It was still a miracle he was still alive.” This quote shows how much Zero is to Stanley. Stanley is happy to know that his only true friend has made it. In the next piece of evidence, you can see that even at the beginning when Stanley would barely communicate with Zero. They now have a strong bond. “What worried him the most, what really ate his insides, was the fact that it wasn’t too late.” (Sachar 146) From this, you can see how much Stanley cares for Zero. Zero remains in the back of Stanley’s mind. You can see through the friendship of Zero, Stanley has changed.
From the help of Zero, Stanley has learned loyalty, understanding the importance of having relationships.
First, we see a sign of trust, “I took the shoes.” (Sachar 175) This shows how Zero and Stanley are being honest with each other. Secondly, this quote shows another example of loyalty. “If only, If only the woodpecker sighs, The bark on the tree was as soft as the skies. While the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely, Crying to the moo-oo-oon, If only, If only.” (Sachar 175) This song is a symbol between Stanley and Zero’s family. This shows how they have a bond. Lastly, this piece of evidence shows compassion, “He thought there was no place he would rather be.” (Sachar 187) Here you can see how happy Stanley is with Zero. Through trust and compassion, they started a bond which brought them to loyalty. From Zero’s help, we can really see how much Stanley has
changed.
After reading about how Stanley has changed through learning important lessons, Zero, and the circumstances at camp we know that everyone can make a change for the better. Sachar really revealed Stanley’s great sense of loyalty and friendship.
