She cuts off her hair and sells it to get a Christmas present for Jim. Her most prized possession at the beginning of the story is her hair, which falls below her knee, but in her selflessness, she sells this in order to buy a proper watch chain for Jim. She doesn’t even care about herself and how much she loved her hair, all she wants is for Jim to be happy. Henry writes “If Jim doesn’t kill me,” she said to herself, “before he takes a second look at me, he’ll say I look like a Coney Island chorus girl. But what could I do—oh! what could I do with a dollar and eighty-seven cents?”(Henry 263). This quote is saying that she would do anything for Jim, even look like a Coney island school girl, not even thinking about herself.

From here it is apparent that Delia is industrious, as she takes “a great deal of pride and pleasure in her work,” (Scott 1). This is seen on the way she spends her Saturdays returning the clean clothes and collecting the dirty ones that are about to be washed.
