Outcome 7 – Understand the importance of e-safety for children and young people 1. Explain the risks and possible consequences for children and young people of being online and of using a mobile phone
Although the internet and modern technology comes with many advantages, as with everything else it also comes with risks and concerns, especially towards children and young people.
The Byron report made in 2008 reported that there is inappropriate material on the internet and on video games that can be easily accessible and are potentially harmful.
Cyber bullying can also take place on the number of social networking sites that are there, or unsuitable
sites can be accessed or there could possibly be adults that are exploiting children and their photographs.
In the home we carry out CEOP training which helps the young people identify some of the risks and make them aware. The young people have to sign to say that they have understood the training before they are approved access to the internet.
2. Describe ways of reducing risk to children and young people from:
* Social networking – set the young peoples’ profiles so only their friends can see them on there and their profile is not accessible to everyone. * Internet use – Parents can put controls on and restrict certain sites so that unsuitable material is not exposed. Some sites can be blocked too. Young people must have the knowledge about the internet and know to report any unusual or suspicious behaviour * Bullying online – Restrict who is on the social networking sites and report any forms of bullying * Using a mobile phone – The same as above would apply on a child’s phone and it is important to make them aware of who they share their phone number with.
