Summary of Sagging Jeans
The passage Are Your Jeans Sagging? Go Directly to Jail is about a controversy over wearing sagging jeans among the society. It shows the positive and negative responses to sagging jeans from different places in the society. There’s a group of people support crafting a law to ban the sagging jeans whereas opponents oppose the legislation for several reasons. Professor of sociology suggests such an extreme response is due to the generation gap. First, Councilwoman Annette Lartigue supported setting up the law, claiming that sagging jeans would pose a threat to the public, as it exposed their private parts in open area. She stated that thought we could not legislate how people dress, but we could charge someone indecent by exposing their body parts. ----- P6, 7 Second, supporters criticized the sagging jeans, as a hip-hop style, was a badge of delinquency which set a bad image like a thug and paid disrespect to the authority. And again, this behaviour crosses the legal line of indecent law. ----- P4 Also, supporters claimed that dress code should be enforced and stricken. School districts had become more aggressive in enforcing dress bans and the NBA had banned people from wearing hip-hop clothing at league events, saying that it projected an image that alienated middle-class audiences. -----P10 On the other hand, opponents believed that it’s a human right to wear what they liked and how they expressed themselves in clothing. They stated that the existing law should protect such a human right. -----P1, 6 In conclusion, the controversy occurs as a result of generation gap, in which the youth’s innovation is regarded as destructive towards rules in the conservative old generations’ eyes. -----P14
