Sam Houston was a very important political figure and the first elected president of the Republic of Texas in 1836. Born on March 2, 1793, Virginia, he lived with eight siblings, mother, and war veteran father who died when houston was at the age of fourteen. This enabled him to establish a record that impressed Andrew Jackson, despite his military status, he decided to trade it in for law in 1818. He decided to become a lawyer after studying law, he took a eighteen month law course in only six months, was elected attorney general for Nashville as well as appointed adjutant general of Tennessee. Houston served two terms in congress from 1823-1827 and elected governor of Tennessee in 1827. However, soon after, he resigned his position to go back to live with the Cherokee in 1829.
