Samwise Gamgee, one of the main characters in J.R.R. Tolkien’s popular series, The Lord of the Rings is also one of the most favorited characters. Many think of him as the true hero of the story, as he was one of the greatest influences in the process of saving Middle Earth. Even when all hope seems lost his show of loyalty and selflessness stand out.
The story starts with Sam as an ordinary hobbit living in the Shire. Hobbits have a rustic, picturesque vibe to them, and Sam is a great example of one. The name Samwise means “simple minded”, and he clearly loves the simple things in life and couldn’t ask for anything more. When climbing down a cliff Sam insists on going first because “The lowest is more likely to slip” (Pg. 592 TTT) Gollum joins them on their journey for a bit and despite the fact Sam knows “the stinker” is untrustworthy, he honors Frodo’s decision to keep him along. Always keeping an close eye out, of course. Approaching the end of the second book Frodo is greatly overpowered by the Ring. Sam is the one to keep encouraging him to go on, and even gives Frodo the last bit of food and water they have. Later on, Sam shows a burst of heroism and courage as he fights the giant spider Shelob. Then, instead of taking the Ring of Power for himself when Frodo appears to be dead, Sam decides to continue the journey to destroy it. But right as he starts to go, a group of orcs come and take Frodo’s body and pronounce him alive. Sam then makes it his mission to do everything he can to rescue Frodo. Once his pursuit is accomplished, Sam unlike any other Ring bearer has no trouble placing the Ring back into Frodo’s possession. This shows that because of his love for simplicity in life, he was not tempted by the Ring’s power. It couldn’t offer him anything he wanted or needed so he wasn’t swayed to selfishly keep it.
