1. “Mother in Manville” by Marjorie Rawlings (Review the story in your IRN) “Mother in Manville” by Marjorie Rawlings is a story about a boy, Jerry, who lives in an orphanage and works for the narrator of the story. The setting takes place high up in the Carolina Mountains. Jerry, after he and the narrator become close, tells the narrator about his mother. This upsets the narrator. But when she leaves at the very end, she finds out that Jerry does not have a mother.
2. “Thank You, Ma’am” by Langston Hughes (Review the story – you can find it on the Calendar as a file)
“Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes is a story about a young boy, Roger, who tries to steal a purse from Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, when she turns a corner. Mrs. Jones then takes care of Roger. She does things like making him was his face, feeding him dinner, and basically treating him like her own son. At the end, she gives him the money he needs and they never see each other again.
3. Introduction, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution (Your Language of Literature book or any website can remind you what these are; think about each part of the story as it applies to “Mother in Manville” and “Thank You, Ma’am”.)

Thank You Ma’am- Sets the scene (11:00 at night, street corner, large woman with a purse, boy tries to steal purse)
Rising Action:
MIM- The author and narrator start becoming friends
TYM- Mrs. Jones confronts Roger on why he tried to steal her purse Climax:
MIM- Jerry tells the narrator that he still has a mother
TYM- Roger goes to the woman’s house and gets treated like a son
Falling Action:
MIM- Narrator states that she will be leaving tomorrow
TYM- They eat dinner and talk about Mrs. Jones life
Resolution:
MIM- Narrator finds out that Jerry does not have a mother, and
