Japan’s nuclear plant in Fukushima, northeast of Tokyo, had been the latest scare for the past few weeks. It seems that the nuke’s condition is worsening. First, it there was just a leak, then it turned into a hydrogen explosion and now it is a partial meltdown. People fear the dangers of radiation especially now that it is reported that there are considerably high radiation to Japan’s water and vegetables. It is important that the public is equipped with knowledge about radiation and its dangers. So let us further discuss this matter.
The Dai-ichi nuclear plant releases steam to the atmosphere to prevent the nuclear power plant’s reactors from exploding after its cooling system failed following the massive earthquake. However the vapor contained some radiation particles. These particles are mainly iodine, caesium and cobalt. The radiation particles can shoot through space at very high speeds that when it go crashing through some material, it collides violently, disrupting the delicate balance of that substance. Thus it can easily penetrate deep inside the human body, damaging some of the biological cells that can lead to cancer, or worse, death. But before we go frantic about radiation’s effects, it should be pointed out that every person in the world is struck by some radiation particles from natural sources or from technology like medical X-rays. The primary concern here is when a person is exposed to a huge amount of radiation. The damage could be acute or chronic.
Acute Radiation Syndrome
Acute radiation syndrome (ARS) also known as radiation poisoning, radiation sickness or radiation toxicity, is a collection of health effects which occur when the entire body receives a high dose of radiation, usually over a short period of time. Relatively smaller doses result in gastrointestinal effects such as nausea and vomiting and symptoms related to falling blood counts such as infection and bleeding.
