Sample College Dismissal Letter
Dear Reinstatement committee,
I would like to appeal my academic dismissal from University of Maryland University College (UMUC). I was not surprised, but I was unhappy to receive a letter after the spring 2016 semester informing me of my dismissal. I would like to urge you to reinstate me for the fall 2016 semester.
I acknowledge, I had a really hard time last semester, and my grades suffered as a result. I don't want to make excuses for my horrible college performance, but I want to explain the circumstances. I knew that working four different jobs would hinder me from doing well in school in my previous semesters. They required a lot of me, but I needed to earn enough money to pay for my tuition at school as I do not qualify for financial aid as a non-citizen student. I thought I would be able to handle the amount of work load and I still think I could have, but I managed my time poorly. Living in America for a long period of time before I was a teenager with no work permit or permission to travel back home (prior to the deferred action law that was passed recently which allows me to now work) took a toll on my mind. After multiple evictions and not being able to afford tuition or feeling like I would amount to

If I am reinstated, I will focus much better on my education, take fewer class hours, and manage my work time more wisely. Fortunately, I found a better job as a teller with better pay and tuition reimbursement. Also, I have spoken with an advisor, and I followed her advice about taking a course at a local community college. I enrolled in the summer II session at Montgomery College and I am currently taking a computer course I failed at UMUC for a better

The reason my academics aren’t going well as you or I would like is because of the several family issues I’ve had to face during my high school career. It began my Sophomore year, I found out my mom needed surgery in her arm so the chances of her cancer spreading would be reduced. I was under a great deal of stress worrying about my mother, taking care of my four siblings making sure they knew everything was going to be okay, even though I wasn’t sure myself. It was all up to me; while my other brother worked to help with bills, my mom being in the hospital, and my dad working. Taking care of my siblings consisted of cooking, homework, cleaning, nightly routine, and putting them to bed. When the work was done it would be around 10 o'clock. It was already tough to buckle down and focus on homework without all the stress. With all this my first semester grade was less than great.…

I know I am not the only person that has had a hard time getting into school, or understanding how. Now that I’m in it, I feel lots better but of course it has been a very hard time coming from a 9-5 job and then straight to another job to pay the bills. First off, I learned that it is not free. No matter how many ads and people I had spoken to telling me “oh yeah, school is free”. It certainly has not been for me at least. I had a few small grants but nothing that was enough to help out with my living costs/ tuition/ books, thus leaving me to the device of taking out student loans. Since then I have been seeking scholarships but have not had the greatest luck. With this information that I have provided, I have now taken one loan out and this is my first loan. I still work two jobs picking up shifts at a bar on a weekend and receiving a student loan. I shouldn’t have to take a loan out that I am going to pay back years from now. I am having to work two jobs and do two classes a semester which to get to any or the degree that I want, will take years thus leaving me with a huge amount of debt I owe. Now, I am still lost just finding my own balance of work and…

Ever since high school, I have struggled with school. After graduating high school, I graduated with a 1.7 GPA. I always knew I was an average student, so I accepted my GPA proudly. However after entering college, everything changed. I knew everything was going to be more difficult and demanding. Beyond all the hardships of academics, I was also going to have to pay for all of education by myself, because my parents could not afford it. This adversity made it extremely difficult for me to decide if I wanted to continue my education and enter college. However, despite my finical struggle I decide to continue my education and apply for college. I applied to Rockland Community College, where I wanted to work on increasing my GPA.…

I had finally been given the opportunity to continue my higher education at an American institution. I knew that this was the chance I had been waiting for: the chance to study dentistry in a country where oral hygiene is incredibly important. However, there were several hurdles along the way I needed to overcome. Initially, I was completely unaware of how the American education system operated. My poor background in the English language made it even harder to overcome this obstacle. To add to this stress, my father was diagnosed with acute arthritis in his neck; a cervical spine fusion in C6 and C7 was pinching the nerve in his right arm, which was causing it to go numb. He wasn’t able to work and went through an extensive amount of painful physical therapy. The circumstances made it harder for me to focus on my dreams. Unfortunately, I had to work fulltime while I was still a fulltime student in college, which was detrimental to my grades. However, I worked even harder and by the time I was a junior in college, I was maintaining dean’s list as a full time student, while working…

At the start of spring semester my freshman year I had an outstanding balance with my home institution. This balance caused me a lot of stress and the time that I should’ve spending study was instead being spent on worrying on thoughts of how I might not be able to return in the fall. Fortunately with the money I earned through my internship that summer I was able to bring my remaining balance down low enough for me to enroll for classes. However in order to not put myself in that position I took on numerous jobs on campus, spreading myself too thin and not leaving enough space for my studies. After talking with my professors and getting their advice I was able to manage being both a full time student and working the hours of a full time employee.…

In winter term 2013 I received three B-‘s and one D- . I know I am capable of doing better but I simply did not put the effort into my academics because I was dealing with negative emotions. I did not take advantage of the opportunities given to me to raise my grades which could have helped with receiving a higher GPA. I did poorly on exams because I did not set aside time to study and do homework. I also made conscious decisions to miss my classes because I felt so depressed. In that moment being happy was more important than going to class. I lost a significantly good amount of friends and my parents were the only support system I had. I just could not find a balance between my academics and dealing with my emotions. I felt depressed and all the negative emotions I was feeling consumed me entirely. I was so involved with undesirable thoughts and emotions – I lost sight to my goals.…

A little over 10 years ago I decided, much to my mom’s dismay, to drop out of college and start my professional endeavor. The decision wasn’t very difficult because from the moment I started college I did not have the desire. School to me felt like an obligation more than a privilege but more importantly I did not realize or felt as if I was learning for my own benefits. My parents paid for my tuition and gave me all the resource and support needed, so I had very little real world pressure, however mentally I just wasn’t able to finish. A part of my felt guilty for letting my parents down and even though they didn’t pressure me I knew it was hard on them especially because the Chinese American community put such an emphasis on education.…
