About Sandalwood Craft Complex
It is one of the huge establishment of KAVERI ORGANNIZATION situated outskirt of Sagar town in Karnataka (india) which has been established with a vision of providing earning opportunities and to market the products of the artisans .There are almost 1800 highly skilled and artful experienced artisans are working under the Kaveri organisation. Under this roof the artisans are provided with dwelling, working opportunities and training. Most of them are equipped with talent, skills and experienced with an informal portfolio of international presence of their product earning a huge appreciation across the globe .Every artisan is awarded with government recognized identity card .
The SAGAR sandalwood craft complex is about 32 years old establishment with a strength of 110 artisans but unfortunately 70 percent of those are now away from the complex for livelihood earning. The organisation has adopted a new programme called Gurukula which is the resemblance of historical Gurukul education,under this Gurukula students will be taught like in earlier days with a provision of all the basic needs apart from the learning and training. The students are learning stone and wood curving.
History of the artisans
The artisans of kaveri craft complex is small community whose origin was based in Kashmir many decades back. During those days these were the actual Brahmin who used to perform ritual rites for the people in the valley .They learned the art of curving in stones and wood to create statues of the god .since sandalwood naturally generates good smell ,they started using sandalwood in the form of incense stick for worshiping purposes and slowly transferred the same meaning in statue by sandalwood curving .God statue out of sandalwood marked as an highest quality material because of its
