Lead/Quote - On Shiptrap island, Rainsford is being hunted by Zarroff, a Russian, peculiar, eerie, skilled hunter that lost interest in hunting animals; therefore, he went hunting humans, and got his hounds to hunt Rainsford all while, “He caught hold of a young springy sapling and to it he fastened his hunting knife, with the blade pointing down the trail; with a bit of wild grapevine he tied back the sapling. In Richard Connell’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford changes his entire philosophy about hunting. For example, when Whitney disagreed with him about jaguars he said, “You’re a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?”(Connell). Rainsford believes animals have no understanding of what is happening, therefore, it’s okay to hunt them. He doesn’t care if they feel pain or understand death and shows no remorse. In addition, when General Zaroff set the hounds to get Rainsford, he “knew now how an animal at bay feels” (Connell). Rainsford has to run away, set traps, and continuously risk his life to have a better chance at surviving. He felt the way animals do when they are being hunted and finally understood…

Fear is a primal human emotion. It drives us to do things, or not do things, and generally keeps us safe. In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is neither a very relatable nor believable character. He remains confident after he gets tricked multiple times, he is too analytical of the situations he finds himself in, he doesn’t and he doesn’t seem to have very much fear about being hunted by the madman Zaroff like wild game. He also does not seem to be too skeptical of a well cultured, master sportsman, living on an unmarked island who wants to invite him into his home to stay.…

First, it is shown that Rainsford is regretful due to the fact that General Zaroff gives him the option to play the most dangerous game or be whipped by Ivan, to which Rainsford chooses to play the game. Rainsford tries again and again to fall asleep at night, but he is helpless with his choice replaying in his mind. “Rainsford could not quiet his brain with the opiate of sleep.” Second, Rainsford’s anxiousness is shown because he is uneasy about the thought of not being able to see the day after next. Although he is a marvelous hunter, there is a possibility that he may be no match to someone who is undefeated in assassinating humans.…

The Most Dangerous Game, by Richard Connell, is an original nonfiction story about two hunters who take themselves into the Amazon to hunt down animals. Rainsford, one of the main hunters, ends up finding himself on a mysterious island after an accident occurs. Comparing to the film, the characters throughout the scenes differentiate in many ways. In fear of death, Rainsford “thought of a native trick he had learned in Uganda [,] slid down the tree [,] caught hold of a springy young sapling and to it he fastened his hunting knife” (Connell,13). Instead of losing his head completely, Rainsford looked around him and realized that he could use nature to his advantage. Rainsford, an experienced hunter, knew the power that terrain could have for his survival he declared “"I'll give him a trail to follow,"… and he struck off from the rude path he had been following into the trackless wilderness” (Connell,11). Connell shows that through acceptance of his surroundings Rainsford became a part of nature instead of merely a man in nature. As Rainsford’s danger grew, so did his reliance upon nature, finally, in the heat of pursuit “he leaped far out into the sea. . . [and] swam” since he “found it quicker than walking through the jungle"(Conell,14). Rainsford saw his environment not as a conquerable obstacle, but as a useable tool. When he throws himself of the ledge, he puts all his faith into nature, he survives because of that faith. The portrayal of nature in “The Greatest Game” shows it as the ultimate friend of Rainsford and truly saved his…
