vs self, On paragraph 9 Santha sits and says hello to another indian girl who wore her indian jewelry, unfortunately the girl didn't respond back.
This is an example of man vs self because she is unsure of following her indian culture. Santha didn't know if she should bring her culture to the school. Furthermore, on paragraph 20 Santha didn't know how to play what the other kids were playing. Santha learned the game differently and she felt left out because she didn't know how to play the game the british way. Because of all these things happening to the sisters they question if indians are compatible for this
school.
The sisters also faced man vs man because of their cultural identity.
Paragraph 13 tells us how Santha said she didn't know her own name, her classmates laughed at her embarrassment. This is a man vs man because her classmates actions affected how Santha felt. Santha cried as she sat back down. Furthermore on paragraph 40 Permila tells her mother why she left school early with Santha, the reason was because her teachers called indians cheaters. Permila was angry that the teacher could say something like that. When she talks to her mother about this she mentions that she shouldn't go back to the school. The sisters were indians sisters who were verbally and emotionally hurt thus making it a man vs man conflict.
Another type of conflicts the sisters faced because of their cultural identity is man vs society. For example in paragraph 15 Santha and Permila eats lunch and notices that the other kids ate sandwiches. This is a man vs society because of the difference in what kind of food indians and british ate during lunch. Also in paragraph 40 Permila and other indians kids were put in the back while they took a test, because the teacher said they were cheaters. This is man vs society because of how the teacher treats her students differently. The teachers places the indians students in the back and british students in the front because they are more trustworthy. All these conflicts that Santha and Permila faced while they were at this british school is very different if you're with indian cultural identity.
To recap, Santha and Permila were different from their classmates not only because they were indians in general, but because of their cultural identity. Because of this they faced conflicts like man vs man, man vs society and and man vs self. Both sisters had their names changed to an english one. Santha was left out of a game because she didn't know how to play it the british way, and Permila was angered of what the teacher said about indians being cheaters, basically treated unfairly from everyone in their new school. We now live in an age where people are more mature and know how to understand when someone is acting wrong. We shouldn't judge a person because of their cultural identity or their personal appearance and shouldn't be so stereotypical, no one wants to be a rotten egg. There are a lot of different cultures around the world and they deserve their happiness and freedom like everyone else thus creating peace.
