Sarah's Key Character Analysis

Throughout Sarah’s Key there are a variety of characters who have vastly different mindsets. Some characters deemed it best to keep the past in the past. Why complicate your life as well as others, with disheveled, bitter, and in some cases disgraceful memories of the past. Especially when it is far easier to bury them, even forget them altogether. In contrast, some characters in the story believed that the past should be brought into the light, cracked wide open, not matter the consequences.
Julia Jarmond. Initially she was unaware of the tragic events of the Vel’ d’Hiv, but quickly became passionately invested in the story of a young girl named Sarah Starzynski. Julia was one of the many characters who thoroughly believed that it is in everybody's best nature to remember; that people like Sarah Starzynski, and William Rainsford need to hear that someone, if only one person, truly cares about the horrors of the Vel d’Hiv. They believe that these characters not only deserve closure for these events, but demand it to move on in their life. Rachel bravely escaped the horrid conditions in which the children were kept at the time of the Vel d’Hiv, only to fall very ill and taken away by officers and most likely killed. Michel Starzynski starved to death in a secret cupboard because the French government rounded up his entire family and attempted to send them to concentration camps. The tens of thousands of Jews that were rounded up during the Vel d’hiv, and killed. Sarah Starzynski. Each and every one of these characters confronted an immense amount of hardship and adversity throughout the Vel d’Hiv. Mercilessly ripped apart from everything they knew and loved, i have the most sympathy for these
