Abigail Williams Character Analysis
In the play The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams has a major effect on the Salem witch trials. She plays a major role in the development of the plot of the story and is the main antagonist as well. It is learned in Act I that she has had an affair with John Proctor and that she is accusing others, later including his wife, of witchcraft. Abigail is not only in love and had an affair with a man that is already married, she gets innocent people killed with her false accusations and runs away instead of dealing with the repercussions of her actions. In the beginning of the play, Abigail is first introduced with the other girls of the town dancing around the fire. Described as “a strikingly beautiful girl, an orphan, with an endless capacity for dissembling” (Miller 1219). This description gets more accurate as time goes on when she tries to be an innocent child who does nothing wrong but then accuses dozens of people of witchcraft, essentially sending them to their deaths. She cares more about herself then the saving of lives of innocent people. Completely self-oriented is the only accurate way to describe her, for she only cares for herself. …show more content…
Most of the people that are left in the town and even the court are starting to believe that she is lying. When given the chance she takes all of Reverend Parris’ money and is suspected of getting on a ship and leaving. “Excellency, I think they be aboard a ship? Danforth stands agape. My daughter tells me how she heard them speaking of ships last week, and tonight I discover my-my strongbox is broke into.” (1265) There is no possible way that Abigail could have lived a full life after running away. Any normal person would have the guilt of being the main factor in the taking of another’s life resting on their shoulders. According to her beliefs she broke major rules. Not only did she dance, but she committed murder or at least a had a role in it, and lied multiple times. She essentially bought herself a one way ticket to eternity with the devil and there is no possible way there is anything other than that in her

In the Crucible, we know that Abigail Williams is obsessed with John Proctor’s love, which motivates her to go down a villainous path. She is vindictive and a compulsive liar, which allows her to have power in the Salem Witch Trials. Here, we can apply the typical character traits of female villains. The romance element is very important to Abigail’s villainy. Abigail's behaviour in the trials is provoked by her past affair with John Proctor as well as her feelings towards Elizabeth. In this situation, Proctor is supposedly responsible for Abigail’s evil nature. The aftermath of this relationship led to the revenge attribute, in which Abigail and the other girls begin accusing people of witchcraft as a way of hopefully eliminating Elizabeth…

In “ The Crucible “ Abigail was accused of the Salem Witch Trials and the dreadful hangings because she was always sneaky, mean, dishonesty, and was the one to blame for when stuff happened. "Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again”. Abigail tried to kill Elizabeth with a curse in the beginning of the play because she had always wanted to marry John Proctor and she thought that the time was right. Therefore, mainly everyone in the village didn’t trust Abigail because she tried to sneak behind Elizabeth back and tried to set her up for the kill. Abigail was the cause of the Salem Witch Trial all because she fell in love with a married man.…

Throughout this play one of the main characters is named Abigail. While reading the play, and before watching the movie, I pictured Abigail as a girl who would appear sweet, but she is also very mischievous and deceiving. So the question is whether or not this is just who Abigail is or if she is pressured by the community to be how…

She would play the role of the leader of all the young girls and if one of them did something she didn’t like they would all beat that one girl up. Abigail would do as she please and never get caught because her friend would back her up. For example , it’s like a group of friends where there’s a leader and they all try to please them so they would become the leaders favorite or not get kicked out of the group. The play states that Abigail says” you will not speak of this or anything that happened or I will hurt you”.…

Miller swiftly introduces us to the ‘strikingly beautiful girl’ who has ‘an endless capacity for dissembling’. This already gives the interpretation that she portrays a strong presence and this is very much apparent as she is established as a domineering, deceitful and manipulative character right from the opening scene. At this time, witchcraft rumours in Salem were rife; Abigail assertively denies,to her uncle, conjuring spirits in the forest.(This is regardless of the fact her social position is just above those of social outcasts)…

Winona Ryder’s statement about Abigail Williams’ character is very controversial. I believe, unlike Ryder, that Abigail was indeed a villain. Much like her friends, Abigail loved being the “talk of the town.” Once Abigail realized she was receiving attention from the town, she found ways to keep it by accusing people of witchcraft. In Act 1, Abigail says, “...I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!” This proves that Abigail made many false accusations against other townspeople to keep the attention on herself. On the other hand, some might believe that Abigail is innocent. People claim that Abigail and her friends are doing it for fun and games at first, but not long after,…

Who is Abigail Williams? is she a liar, a witch or is she really just an honest soul trying to prove her innocence? Some people could relate to Abigail, but those people are probably the liars and cheats of this world. Abigail Williams is one of the characters that made the least number of changes in The Crucible. Abigail's lies never changed throughout The Crucible and she continued to be deceptive. She refused to tell what happened in the woods and she lied about seeing people with the devil. In the beginning Abigail is denying all the things Paris saw when he ventured into the woods and discovered the girls dancing in a circle naked around Tituba. Near the middle of The Crucible Abigail continues to lie about the situation and the people she blamed. Then in the end Abigail remained the same and vanished without a trace.…

One of the differences between Abigail and Elizabeth lies in the relationship between the accuser and the accused. Miller manages to show Abigail as a villainous character through multiple reasons while maintaining a simple message that accusing people wrongfully is a horrendous thing to do. She is shown to be accusing people in the whole village, managing to get the number of accused persons to hundreds in just a few weeks. Abigail, at the most basic level of the play, is simply a person who could care less about anything, except for their own gain. By accusing people, Abigail can be seen gaining multiple things of interest: Fame in the village, entertainment (which was hard to come by in the Puritan society), and lastly, John Proctor. Therefore, she is a very direct reminiscent of the people of the Salem village…

The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a play that takes place in 1692 in the small Massachusetts village of Salem. Salem is a Puritan community; they are a very restrictive society with strong beliefs. They believe in hard work and prayer, therefore they consider material and sexual desires unnatural and evil. Abigail Williams, the main character is the reason for the witch trials that begin in Salem. She is dishonest, manipulative and her seductive ways is what makes her the antagonist of this play.…

Abigail Williams doesn't have much luck in this play, and she never really had. She lives with her uncle - Reverend Parris and his daughter Betty, because she's an orphan and claims she: ''Saw Indians smash my dear parents heads on the pillow next to mine.'' Perhaps this brutality from such a young age caused her to develop into someone that is brutal toward others around her? But living in Parris' house couldn't have been easy either. We're told in 'act one (the overture)' that he had: "...no interest in children... mouths shut until bidden to speak." Living with a careless man would've been a bore for young Abigail, plus being a young unmarried girl at this time would've been a struggle. The repressive lifestyle of the puritan society at that time would've been extremely dull for Abigail, and so some of her actions are plausible, but not excusable.…

Abigail Williams is a seventeen year old girl; she is an orphan as her parents were murdered by Indians. Abigail is malicious, evil and a liar. She was Elizabeth Proctors servant before she got fired. Elizabeth fired her as she found out she had an affair with her husband John Proctor. Abigail is a complex character who was the result of nineteen people’s innocent deaths throughout the play suggesting she doesn’t have many values. This shows the contrast with Elizabeth as Elizabeth is a woman who is very religious and sticks with strict, correct morals. Although Elizabeth knows about John and Abigail’s affair, she still deeply loves and respects him and is pregnant with their child. This is shown when she says to John ‘’I do not judge you’’ Elizabeth represents love and honesty in the play.…

Some of the characterisation in the play includes that of the main antagonist, Abigail Williams. While in the presence of her uncle/the judges of the court, Abigail is portrayed to be meek and timid; the expected behaviour of a traditional Salem woman. However, her true character/personality is revealed when she is in the presence of only the girls (that were with her in the forest) or even John Proctor. From this, we can observe that Abigail’s character is in fact extremely intelligent and cunning, and this is emphasised as the play goes on, and she escapes the Salem trials without even a scratch.…
