Who Is Abigail Deceiving In The Crucible
The Crucible play takes place in Salem, Massachusetts set around the mid to late 1600’s. Inside this peculiar little town most people are very religious and believe in the Puritan religion. For a little background Puritans do not believe or participate in activities like dancing and reading novels. Growing up as a little kid in the Puritan religion could seem like you are being hidden or kept away from activities that would alter your beliefs towards how your religion teaches them. Throughout this play one of the main characters is named Abigail. While reading the play, and before watching the movie, I pictured Abigail as a girl who would appear sweet, but she is also very mischievous and deceiving. So the question is whether or not this is just who Abigail is or if she is pressured by the community to be how …show more content…
During this part of the play characters are filled with hysteria and it seems as though madness has struck the town. Abigail makes accusations after all of the other girls have already accused many people in the town. I believe Abigail started to accuse others in the town of witchcraft so that she could have attention and was also pressured into it. Since everyone else was making accusations Abigail would have needed to also accuse people or else they might have started to question her or accused her of being a witch.
Finally, I believe that Abigail is not who she is because of choice but instead because she is a victim of the society. Abigail never really started anything by herself or did anything first she was just a follower of the other girls in the town. This was a very strange time in Salem filled with mass craze and hysteria so the pressure would have been very high because no one wanted to be accused of witchcraft and for that reason I think Abigail would not be who her character is in the play if it were not for the other

All through the act Abigail lied about everything which caused conflict with everyone in the town. The moment Betty told Abigail about the fact that she drank blood and didn’t tell Parris about it she became worried. “Betty, you never say that again! You will never” (lines 341) shows how Abigail left out an important detail that contributes to the situation with the girls that are being accused of being witchcraft. The rest of the play either she hid things or lied to get her way out of trouble.…

In conclusion, Abigail’s flaws of lust, dishonesty, and temper led her to be the most responsible for the tragedy of witch-hunt in Salem. I chose Abigail because I believed that she was the reason this whole thing started and, if it wasn’t for her lustful thoughts, ability to lie without being caught, and her quick-temper fits all of this could have been…

She truly believed that the women she accused of witchcraft were trying to come after her. A sane and mentally healthy person would recognize when it is time to “drop the act” after over a dozen innocent lives have been taken. Abigail was so mentally driven by what she thought was right, she couldn't see the wrong in it. Abigail was so stubborn about what she wanted, which was John. She was manipulated and “abused” by John, she was willing to sacrifice other people’s lives to save herself from everyone and John’s individual reputation.…

"The Crucible," took place during the witch trial in Salem, which was an isolated village in Massachusetts, U.S.A. The society of Salem is a very comforting society where the men have the power of the women, and where the men run the church. The Puritans in Salem live in a sacred society. In a sacred society, the church has the power because all of the citizens live by the way of God and believe they are his messengers. Rather than God being in power, it's the fear of the devil that drives the society of Salem to follow the Christianity religion very closely. Abigail Williams manipulates the residents of Salem in order to gain authority over John Proctor. While the church consistently holds power in Salem, Abigail gains power over Proctor and…

She is so selfish she yells at people, threatens to beat people up, and wishes death upon them if she doesn’t get her way. In the beginning of the play all the girls should have told everyone what really happened when they were dancing in the forest. If that had happened none of the girls would have started to accuse any one of witchcraft. But since Abigail is so selfish she ruins an entire town by threatening people her friends so her reputation and her name do not get ruined. Abigail tells all of her friends “If anyone spreads the word about us doing witchcraft, I will come to your house and kill you.” I would not want that kind of friend if she threatens to kill me. Also Betty went into a coma so Abigail was trying to wake her up. Abby started threatening Betty that she would beat her up if she didn’t wake up. All of sudden Betty gets up and screams out a window that Abby drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor! She also threatens Marry Warren to not tell anyone that she was in the forest with him or her. I can see why Abigail is threatening everybody because she wants to save her name and her reputation. But everything she does it is in a very selfish…

If she was bewitched, why would it be happening in court? The accused obviously would not want to prove her guilt in front of a judge with an edgy finger for signing death certificates. Also, Abigail lied to get some backing on her accusations by accusing two of the worst ladies in town of witches, as well as a black slave from Barbados. This was very believable, as these women held no social rank among the town. This has been a common way throughout history to get support for individuals and groups. The Nazi party in Germany accused Jews of all their economic woes. It gained backing among the party as they looked for blame, and Nazis gained from it power. Abigail is a skillful liar and a quality enemy. Abigail purposely hurt herself for evidence in court. "I have been hurt…I have seen my blood runnin' out! I have been near to murdered everyday because I done my duty pointing out the Devil's people." (Abigail 108) She was very good about pinning guilt on others and the fact that she was the victim. She had a way with convincing both the judge and…

Doesn’t just about everyone have that one friend who is just straight up mean and lies all the time. Take that person and multiply their personality by ten and they will still be nowhere close to being as evil as Abigail Williams. She is the utmost stuck up self-centered person in the story. She has no respect for anybody seeing as to how she believes they are rodents compared to her. Throughout the story, she hurts many people and ruins many more people's lives. Abigail's personality can be described as a Rose. She is beautiful on the outside, but underneath the “red petals” is a “long thorny stem”, that being her dark evil personality.…

Early in the play, it is established that Abigail and John Proctor have had an affair, this being the reason Goody Proctor fired Abigail and also why Abigail starts the whole fiasco in order to get of Good Proctor so she and John can be together. Why Abigail thinks calling witchery on massive amounts of people will allow her and John to be together is beyond the understanding of the writer of this essay. But for some reason, she thinks this is a good idea and proceeds to aid in the accusation and death of 19 innocent people. One who is mentally stable would surely not take such extreme actions.…

“Abigail Williams, seventeen, enters – a strikingly beautiful girl, an orphan, with an endless capacity for dissembling. Now she is all worry and apprehension and propriety” (6 Miller). Winona Ryder’s statement about Abigail Williams’ character is very controversial. I believe, unlike Ryder, that Abigail was indeed a villain. Much like her friends, Abigail loved being the “talk of the town.” Once Abigail realized she was receiving attention from the town, she found ways to keep it by accusing people of witchcraft. In Act 1, Abigail says, “...I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!” This proves that Abigail made many false accusations against other townspeople to keep the attention on herself. On the other hand, some might believe that Abigail is innocent. People claim that Abigail and her friends are doing it for fun and games at first, but not long after,…

Abigail posses an immoral persona and many of her actions are unethical. She wants one thing and one thing only, John Proctor, a married man. She participates in infidelity and constructs a web of lies. She knows that it is a sin to have sex with a married man but continues to proclaim her love for him, “I will not, i cannot! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is you love me yet!” (The Crucible, Act 1). In connection with the infidelity she lies on Elizabeth, Proctor’s wife, and says her spirit stabbed her when in reality she stabbed herself. Similar to her lack of emotions it proves how immoral, unethical, and selfish she really is.…
