A savanna is a flat grass-covered region with scattered shrubs, bushes, and isolated trees, which can be found between a tropical rainforest and desert biome. A savanna is one type of grassland biome. The temperatures of savannas differ according to its season. During the dry season the temperatures are either very hot or cold. In the wet season the temperature is usually warm. If the savanna biome were to receive a little less rain it would become a desert. If it got a little more it would become temperate grassland. Savannas are typically dry receiving less than 30 inches of rain on average in a year. As little as 4 inches of rain fall during the dry season. The dry climate mixed with intense heat will result in wildfires which are common in this biome. …show more content…
Even though the savanna is a very dry area, some animals have adapted to the environment.
Some common animals include elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinoceros, buffalo, lions, leopards, kangaroos, ostriches and cheetahs. The climate factors have led to an open landscape with widely spaced trees. Many of the animals that live in savannas rely on speed for survival. For others camouflaging is better. The open areas of the savanna provide little means of escape from quick predators so they need a way to survive. There are a number of exotic plant species found in the savannas around the world today. Among the wood plant species are Prickly Acacia, Rubbervine, Mesquite, Lantana, and Prickly Pear. Many herbaceous species have also been found through the savannas. Some include Buffel grass, Giant rat's tail grass, stylos, and other
plants.
Mining and wood production has caused some pollution in the environment. 40% of Brazilian Cerrado and llanos, brushes and plants of the savanna, have been cleared for agriculture. Many plants have adapted to surviving wildfires in the savanna, but as more and more farmers move in, they burn more and more areas for more acres for agriculture. This results in the lessening of the natural vegetation. The only recreational uses for the savannas are touring. This does not populate the area except for the fact that it ruins plants by the pavement of roads. There have been a few instances for the protection of the savannas. Some people opened a wildlife refuge and this has save a lot of the wildlife. Also the Prairie Restorations, Inc., have helped restore the savannas. The savanna is a very important biome and if we lost it, many rare plants and animal species would be gone also.
