Scarlet Letter Pearl Symbolism
Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. Almost everything in a literary piece can be used as a symbol. If the author takes the time to write about it then it’s important. If the object doesn't seem relevant than it is probably being used as a symbol and probably has a deeper meaning. Anything can be used as a symbol, and in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne there are many different symbols. A certain import symbol to me in the book is Pearl, Hester’s daughter.
Pearl was born out of Wedlock and Hester chose to name her Pearl because “as being of great price, purchased with all she had—her mother’s only treasure.” A pearl is a gemstone

Symbolism is something that many others use in their writing to give meanings without coming out and saying it. The dictionary states symbolism as “the art or practice of using symbols especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning or by expressing the invisible or intangible by means of visible or sensuous representations as artistic imitation or invention that is a method of revealing or suggesting immaterial, ideal, or otherwise intangible truth or states.” When authors do this it lets readers get different ideas as what they mean as they read the story, which makes them think a lot more as they read the story. This story has a lot of symbolism, most of it…

She was a Pearl that didn’t want to hide; she wanted to shine brightly. Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author of The Scarlet Letter, introduces Pearl as a wise child who’s always striving to learn more. In Hester’s life, Pearl is given to her as a symbol of Hester’s past. Although Hester and Dimmesdale could have committed adultery without having Pearl, Hawthorne made Pearl a character to symbolize Hester and Dimmesdale’s actions. Pearl serves as a living example of Hester and Dimmesdale’s actions to Hester herself, Dimmesdale, the townspeople, and the reader.…

The Scarlet Letter is a book of much symbolism. One of the most complex and misunderstood symbols in the book is Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne. Pearl symbolizes a real and constant reminder of Hester’s sins, she is much more prominent and evident than the “A” that Hester wore, for she is a real living breathing person who will always remain a part Hester. Hawthorne places Pearl in the novel to explore the theme of Romanticism, to create a character who is passionate and true, one who questions the behavior and values of Hester and Dimmesdale.…

Hawthorne uses Pearl as a big source of symbolism in The Scarlet Letter. Pearl represents the unseen tumult that is inside of Hester, that even Hester herself cannot see. She symbolizes the secrecy of Hester and Dimmesdale’s love outside of the strict rules of the Puritan society. She represents how forbidden it was to love outside of a marriage or family. Pearl was a last hope for Dimmesdale to pass away peacefully and without regrets. She was her own hope for a better life and to fit in…

Pearl’s isolation and her reliance upon her mother has led to her not being able to form relationships between other people. In the story, Pearl is conceived by the unfortunate crime of adultery. She is isolated from everyone but her mother, Hester. Hester is the only person Pearl interacts with in a loving way throughout the story. Pearl is very protective of Hester; when the children were making fun of Hester Pear, “. . . snatching up stones and fling at them, (Hawthorne 64).” This shows how she stands up for her mother and only her mother. Because of Hester committing adultery, Pearl is seen as a product of sin and not a single towns person will like Pearl because of their compliance to their faith. Pearl is described by the townspeople…

Strangely, Hester sees her own daughter as an irregular character and surprisingly calls her an imp. On the contrary, this could be seen as not strange at all and instead taken as Hester not wanting to accept her daughter. This thought greatly affects Pearls character because it gives her a reason to rebel against her mother. But, no one really knows or understands Pearl, many just assume or think who they want to think she is. Certain townspeople get a glance on Pearls unknown side when she, “resembled, in her fierce pursuit of them, an infant pestilence, --the scarlet fever, or some such half-fledged angel of judgment,--whose mission was to punish the sins of the rising generation” (83). When Pearl unveils the protective side of her personality, everyone might assume that she is wild or an unobedient child when in reality Pearl knows she should not be treated like a minority and sticks up for herself. This shows how Pearl is a unusual child for her time because many obedient children would not imagine to act like this. Due to a lack of socialism, Pearl is transformed into her true potential which is unusual because more townspeople would expect Pearl to become unsuccessful and dimwitted. This fact alone emphasizes how Pearl chooses to be different and how she uses her intelligence for her own advantage. She is cunning and able to inspect complex observations. This helps her later in life as a…

“Symbolism means that each of his characters represents an aspect of life or of society” (Diorio 63). In The Scarlet Letter limited characterization is also used by Hawthorne. The Scarlet Letter shows characterization through Puritanism. “Since the Puritans revere authority, their authorities really are their representatives; and this is why the only developed Puritan characters in The Scarlet Letter are the rulers of church and state. The others are anonymous; the Puritan people as a whole are simply a crowd that Hawthorne calls on occasionally for general effect” (“Who?” 54). Hester Prynne is the main character in The Scarlet Letter “Most of what the readers know about Hester, however, comes from the picture Hawthorne paints of her life after adultery” (Diorio 51). As you can see these two novels use mostly Puritanism and some Symbolism to give descriptions of the…

American novelist, Nathaniel Hawthorne, in chapter 6 of his novel The Scarlet Letter, argues that the main character Hester Prynne and her daughter Pearl are portrayed as outcasts towards the novels Puritan society and time setting. He supports this claim by first describing the worries Hester experiences for her growing daughter Pearls future reputation, then he lets the readers know that because of Hester's exclusion from society due to an act of transgression, she and Pearl become dependable companions towards one another, then Hawthorne continues to display the Puritans criticism within the children of the society and their isolation from charasmatic Pearl, and finally he personally notes in the novel by stating how pearl "...lacked reference…
