The Godfather
The Godfather, filmed in 1972, is known as one of America’s number one classics! This
film holds many scenes where violence and control is portrayed. The Godfather is my favorite
old movie! This movie holds everything from exciting action scenes, to world famous actors like,
Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Cann, and many others. The Godfather holds many different
themes, but the one theme that is most noticeable throughout the movie is violence. Almost
every scene in this movie is either a camera shot of violence, or some characters talking about
violence. However, the violence is what makes this movie a classic.
It all starts in the opening scene of the Godfather where a man is pleading with Don Vito
Corleone, the top dog in his mafia business, to hurt some men for his daughter. He tells his story
of his innocent daughter being taken advantage of by some young men which hints to the
audience that this man’s daughter was raped. This opening scene is dark with little light shown
which sets the mood for the entire movie. The audience gets the sense right away that Don
Corleone has the power to make things happen like justice and make people pay for their wrong
doings. After a while Don Corleone grants the man his wish to bring justice to his assaulted
daughter but in exchange Don Corleone tells the man that he will call him and ask for a favor in
the future. In this scene, we see that Don Corleone is in charge and that violence is the
reoccurring theme throughout the film.
The next scene is of a singer Johnny Fontana who is Don Corleone’s godson. Johnny is there to
ask the “Godfather” for his help in landing a lead role in an upcoming movie. Johnny believes
that if he got this role it will help his career progress. Corleone sends his adopted son Tom
Hagen to California to make the director cast Johnny. After the director objectively refuses, Tom
