In Lord of the Flies Jack, the antagonist, is an allegory to the ruthless totalitarian dictator, Adolf Hitler, who conquered Europe during the second World War. Both Hitler and Jack used tactics such as terrorism as well as intimidation, in order to acquire and maintain power. Leaders often use fear to control their people; history has proven this method to be powerful and effective. In the novel, Jack inflicts fear on the group of boys by supporting the idea of the beast. Jack says, “and then, the beast might try to come in. You remembered how he crawled,” and then, “the semicircle [of boys] shuddered and muttered in agreement” (Golding 160). Jack, seeing how his words captivate the minds of the boys, continues, “he came--disguised. He may come again even though we gave him the head of our kill to eat. So watch; and be careful”(Golding 160). The 1940’s surely influenced Golding’s writings as he crafted the Lord of the Flies.
In the 1800s, the world was very different from what we know today. Much of the population was heavily influenced by religion. Puritanism reigned strictly during the colonial period. Religion had an direct influence on everything from education to daily decisions. Many individual’s religious motivations were even tested. In the story “Young Goodman
