School Counselors- school counselor help students at all levels to understand and cope with social, behavioral, and personal problems or issues. Schools or education counselors emphasize preventive and developmental counseling to enhance student’s personal, social, and academic growth and to provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they worsen. School counselors often provide special services, including alcohol and drug prevention programs, conflict resolution classes, vocational counseling, and also try to identify cases of domestic abuse and other family problems that can affect a student’s development. According to New York State Education Department school counselor have two options for educational requirements which is: completion of a New York counseling program or baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education or from an institution authorized by NY Department of Education and at least 30 semester hours of approved graduate study in the field of school counseling or option 3 be nationally certified as a school counselor by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
The required coursework is to complete child abuse identification and a school violence prevention and intervention workshop. In addition, experience requirements are supervised practice in school counseling. The internship must be in a K-12 school setting under the supervision of a regionally accredited college and university having an approved program of preparation for the certificate.
