School Counselors- school counselor help students at all levels to understand and cope with social, behavioral, and personal problems or issues. Schools or education counselors emphasize preventive and developmental counseling to enhance student’s personal, social, and academic growth and to provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they worsen. School counselors often provide special services, including alcohol and drug prevention programs, conflict resolution classes, vocational counseling, and also try to identify cases of domestic abuse and other family problems that can affect a student’s development. The required coursework is to complete child abuse identification and a school violence prevention and intervention workshop. In addition, experience requirements are supervised practice in school counseling. There is a distinction between grief counseling and grief therapy. Counseling involves helping people with uncomplicated, or normal, grief to health and resolution. Grief therapy involves the use of clinical tools for traumatic or complicated grief reactions. This is when the grief reaction last long or manifests itself through behavioral symptom, or by a grief response outside the scope of a culturally-defined normality.
The American Academy of Grief Counseling notes that therapy connotes something more advanced than just counseling. Grief counselors typically work with individuals with normal expressions of grief; the process can include educating and coaching as well as listening, individuals with more profound responses will need help from a qualified therapist. Licensing and certifications for grief counselors in New York state and Florida must have a master’s level in broad category, for example professional counseling or clinical social work. Most counseling professional pursue voluntary certifications in grief counseling.
