For over 100 years, most schools have adhered to a traditional summer vacation schedule which stemmed from our primitive technological resources and advancements. However, as technological growth was made schooling throughout the year became more practical and thus the concept of a year-round schedule was introduced. With year-round schedules now becoming ever more prevalent and traditional schedules becoming slowly obsolete, a debate has sparked between the merits of the two. One of the biggest issues that comes with year round school programs is the possibility of decreased quality family time, as many people use the long summer break to take extended vacations. However, most of the breaks provided by the yearlong calendar allow for at least two weeks of down time. In fact, parents with year round students find that they “appreciate the flexibility provided by year-round schooling, as it can be easier (and cheaper) to plan vacations during off-peak times.”…

Have you ever considered switching to year round schooling? Here are some reasons not to switch, the summer time is packed and expensive, it’s harder for students and teachers, and finally there is a greater possibility for brain drain. In the article “Top 10 Reasons Why Year Round School is a Good Idea,” it states that by having one big vacation block, travel is more expensive. No matter the amount of time you get for summer you will still wind up spending more because both of the summer breaks, for year round and regular schooling, are during the summer months which are when airlines raise their prices. Also, by having less time off there is less time to play sports and hangout with family which is what most kids, like myself, look forward too. Another statement from the article said that breaks that are frequent are good for both students and teachers. With more frequent breaks the teachers will have to cram in all the information before each break. Students look forward to days off of school, but if breaks are more frequent, then they won’t get as excited because the breaks happen so…

Most importantly, year-round school would cause students to be exhausted. Even with the several shorter breaks, students would probably feel that they would be constantly working and stressed. Continuing to give students a longer break would allow them to rest and come back to school strong and ready for the upcoming year. A two or three month break is important to kids because they can be rewarded for a demanding school year. Summer allows children to balance work and play, which is important. Admittedly, some may argue that summer vacation causes children to forget everything, and this causes them to have to relearn and review forgotten concepts at the start of each new year. However, in my personal experience I have noticed that myself and others forget concepts just a few weeks into break, as opposed to a couple months into break. I have also noticed that after shorter vacations such as winter/spring break, kids come back needing a refresher of what they learned. Having to review concepts once a year is exhausting enough for both teachers and students. Imagine if this had to be done several times a year! It would defeat the purposes of having year-round school…

On a average students enrolled in conventional school programs lose about one month of learning every summer, especially in the areas of math and spelling . Students that had no academic growth over summer breaks and at worst, students were losing up to three months of learning. Time away from school during summer clearly causes a gap in a child education. Some children learn more when they spend less time away from school. There are different type of layouts for year-round school. A common misconception is that year- round schools are in session more days than a regular school, depending on the school district. People sometimes have a misconception that year-round school are in sessions more days than a regular school. Students that attend both type of schools usually attend around one hundred eighty days in a school year. Students usually have short breaks allotted within a school year. A favorable advantage to any year-round school attendees, there is no long three month summer break, filled with little learning. Instead students only get a brief break from school and they roll right for one grade to the next…

In the United States, 60% of high school teachers feel that school should go year round with intermediate breaks. When school starts again in mid August, students have just gotten back from summer vacation, and have forgotten the material learned the year before. This a problem for teachers when they begin to teach new things that students need last year's information for. Some teachers have suggested that summer break should be shortened and other breaks should be longer so that students have less time to forget content. Parents and students argue that students need time in the summer more than other times because that is more convenient to them. Parents have certain dates they can be off, so having a longer time in somer…

For example, in Australia, the school-year is done in four terms each consisting of anywhere from nine to eleven weeks. School holidays are one week in April, two weeks in June or July, two weeks in September and seven or eight weeks over summer in December or January (the number of weeks off over the summer will depend on your school, your level and state you live in). In Vietnam, one school-year usually includes two terms, first term last for five months (from September to about January) and second one will finish by the next four months (from February to early June). We have two main holidays which are Tet (or Lunar New Year) and summer holiday. On the Lunar New Year’s Days we often have about one week off school (it may be longer or shorter). After finishing nine-month school-year we, in theory, have three months of summer holiday. However, in fact extra-studying shortens the time down to one months or less (especially to students grade 9 or…

What is the point of a holiday break when students have to do homework during it? Why is it called a holiday break if students aren’t really getting a break from school work?
