Identify the different values associated with that amenity. Then, identify a policy tension between the amenity that you choose and a threat to that amenity. For example, clean air is threatened by economic interests that pollute the air (e.g., industries that do not use “green” technology when emitting pollution, automobiles, large-scale confined feeding animal operations, etc.); wilderness areas are threatened by gas and oil interests, pressures to build roads in roadless areas, etc. Also, discuss the ways that different worldviews (e.g., biocentricism, anthropocentrism) play into the controversy surrounding the issue. In your opinion, have lawmakers adequately protected the value of the environmental amenity? Why or why not? Which worldview is present in your response to part E of this…

Zero population growth (ZPG) may be described as the state in which a country, state, or region is in during a time where the population does not increase nor decrease. At this state, the average total fertility rate is 2.1. As of now, the zero population growth movement is targeting underdeveloped countries and regions that have an exploding population, such as India and Sub-Saharan Africa. While ZPG may contradict with religious beliefs in these underdeveloped areas, there are ways to achieve a population that remains the same, such as birth control (condoms, pills), family planning, and pushing higher education on the poor. Birth control would prevent pregnancies. Family planning would help poor families to determine how to handle the situation of having two kids. Putting education into the equation would cause a better economy in India and Sub-Saharan Africa, which would then detour families from having a large number of kids. The neo-Malthusians believe that while population increases exponentially (1 person, 2 people, 4 people, 8 people, 16 people), food supply only increases arithmetically (1 tomato, 2 tomatoes, 3 tomatoes, 4 tomatoes).1 During the rapid increase of population, neo-Malthusians have a strong feeling that the food supply will run out, and thus, they agree with the zero population growth movement. However, to contradict this, the Cornucopians believe that the earth has a limitless natural resource base and that we humans can constantly expand without a problem.2…

Living in New York, walking on crowded streets, and bumping into people no matter which corner I take, I can see the issues that arise when people think of population growth. It’s an issue we don’t usually think about, but one that Paul Ehrlich feels strongly about. He believes that it’s only a matter of time that we run out of food, and that humans will cease to survive. As seen in the first video, Ehrlich elucidates his point by repeating the word “finite” in the video. He refers to our planet and our resources as finite, and thusly juxtaposes the two to population growth, saying that population growth cannot increase without the resources to support it. This coincides with the theory that Thomas Robert Malthus came up with, which said that there were only two ways to prevent population growth, and to keep it in check; one way would be to limit births (preventative check), and another would occur if there were war, famine or disease (positive check).…

In the beginning of my research, I learned some basic information about college and preparation. Since I’m a senior, I felt that academic preparation was already too late since colleges mainly look at my gpa from grades from 10-11. The grades I have now will still affect my gpa and most importantly scholarship eligibility, so I’m aiming to do my best. So far, I’ve met the fall checklist by checking with my counselor to see if I make graduation requirements. What I haven't done is register for and take the standardized tests required for college admission. I was recently informed at Vista’s college night that in order to go straight into a four year you have to have already taken the SAT for college leveled class placement and submit your scores to the college you are applying at. Also, there are business I and my parents need to visit colleges campuses during the spring and in the winter apply to FAFSA (free application for federal student aid) or any other financial aid applications the school I apply at may require. I also learned about the different types of Aid there are. There is Federal and Nonfederal. Federal Aid is money given to you that you don't have to payback, that is if you qualify. But if there is still more help needed, there is the federal student loan. But just just like any loan, money borrowed is money paid back. These loans are often more advised rather than other types of loans such as private student loans because of the often lower fixed interest rates. Another feature Federal Aid includes are Grants and Scholarships. These are sometimes known as “gift aids”, as said on the website, because its free money given without owing. Financial Aid is for definitely a main focus for…

My parents are from Jamaica and never fully completed their education. I've always had to make the most of financial aid and luck. My parents are definitely not rich but we've always found ways to pay for what we need. My sister just enrolled at Cornell University almost entirely through financial aid and merit based scholarships.…

With natural resource depletion and the human population at all time highs, both economists and ecologists alike are asking, “How much further can our population continue to grow.” At a historical glance, this question has been gone unscaved, as mans thirst for growth has always been regulated by high mortality rates (due to diseases and inadequate medical practices). However, better health care and social improvements have increased longevity since 1800 and, consequently, the human population has seemingly grown without bound up until 1970. Now, with the world population exceeding 6 billion people, for the first time mankind is beginning to breach the capacity limitations set by the biosphere.…

Imagine that the world’ population is growing by 200,000 people per a day. Even though birth rate has decline over this decade, population’ rate has climbed. Between 1980 and 2025, the population of law and middle income countries will more double to 7.0 billion, compared with 1 billion for high income countries. However, the number of children born per year in the world has stopped growing since 1990, and the total number of children below 15 years old in the world are now relatively stable around 2 billion. In fact, the rich are getting richer, but the more numerous poor are getting poorer. Some people believe that population growth and its consequences is a highly complex issue because its affect many major problems such as scarcity of resources, health problems, and lack education.…
