How to Extract Ginger
[pic]Extracting ginger into oil allows it to be used in two ways -- for medicine and cooking.
Ginger has been used in cooking in the Southeast Asian region for several thousands of years and has become a favorite addition to many baked goods and dishes in Europe for the past several hundred. However, the properties of ginger are not only perfect for cooking, but can also help with digestive troubles or to treat viruses. Extracting ginger through oil creates a strong smelling liquid that can be used in topical applications for herbal treatment of ailments or for additional flavor and scent in cooking.
Things You'll Need • Fresh ginger root • Vegetable peeler • Cutting board • Sharp kitchen knife • Small saucepan • Vegetable oil • Cheesecloth • Small bowl • Grapefruit seed extract • Measuring spoons • Stirring spoon • Glass bottle, with lid

Instructions

o 1 Rinse the ginger under cool water and rub it all over with your fingers to remove any dirt or debris. o 2 Peel the ginger pieces, breaking them apart if need be to allow for better access. Place them on the cutting board and slice them into thin pieces, about 1/8-inch thick. o 3 Place the ginger pieces in the small pan in one even layer. Pour enough oil over top of them to completely cover the pieces by 1/8-inch. o 4 Place the oil on the stove and turn the burner to medium-low heat. Watch the oil closely and maintain the temperature when the oil begins to form small bubbles throughout it. o 5 Allow the oil to heat for 24 hours to ensure as much as possible of the root is extracted. o 6 Place the cheesecloth, folded over twice, over the small bowl and pour the oil substance into it. Lift out the cheesecloth, containing the root material, and allow it to drip any excess oil into the bowl before discarding it. o 7

One method used to isolate clove oil is steam distillation. This distillation technique requires liquids to be heated to their boiling points and conducted their hot vapors into a cooling device where they condense; this process involves steam mechanically carrying the oils through the distillation process1. Water is used as the liquid that is boiled in the flask containing the cloves; this is because clove oils and water are immiscible. In order to use steam distillation effectively to isolate organic compounds that decompose…
