Science Test- Paper Towels
“Which kitchen paper is the best at absorbing liquid?”

Scientific Principles- Since paper towels are used to pick up liquids, the volume of liquid it can hold is important. The amount of liquid a towel can absorb can be measured by the volume of liquid it picks up.

Aim- To investigate which kitchen paper is the best at absorbing most liquid.

Hypothesis- I think that Viva/Kleenex will be the best at absorbing most of the liquid because I think it’s the thickest paper towel and I think that it can hold a fair amount of liquid that it requires.

Equipment- • Different types of paper towels- To test out which paper towel absorbs most liquids in the experiment. 1. Home Brand Coles 2. Viva/Kleenex 3. Handee Ultra • Different types of liquids- To use to test the paper towels with. 1. Orange Sunkist 2. Coke 3. Schweppes Raspberry • Stopwatch – To time the 30 seconds • Tape measurer or ruler – To measure the amount of liquid that has been absorbed onto the kitchen paper. • Sticky Tape – To tape the paper towels to A4 Paper after they have been used in the experiment. • 3 cups – To pour the liquids into. • A4 Paper - To put the kitchen paper towels onto. • Pen - To label the 3 cm and to gather results. • Camera – To take a photo of the paper towels.

Risk Assessment Table-

|Item |Risk |Justification |
|A4 Paper |First Aid Needed (6) |Paper Cut |
|Cup(s) |First Aid Needed (4) |Could cut yourself if some sharp edges |
| | |appear or either if the cup smashes. |

Procedure- 1. Grab 3 cups that are the exact same length, width and is the exact same size. 2. Pour into the 1st cup

Our hypothesis was confirmed. The purpose of this lab was to find out if Double Stuffed Oreos are actually double the filling. The results showed that the mass of the filling was a little more than double the regular Oreos. There were no trends because we’re only testing two things. Another experiment that could be an extension of this one is bounty paper towel vs. regular paper towel; which is more absorbent?…

The IRP project I am doing is based off the subject of seed germination. The seeds I will be planting are cherry belle radish seeds, freshly bought. Instead of planting the seeds in soil like it is normally done, the plant seeds will be placed on paper towels to grow for better observation of the roots, and for a quicker result (N.p., n.d Web. http://homeguides.sfgate.c om/germinate-paper-towels-22813.html).The brand of paper towel I am using is Bounty white paper towels. What makes this experiment unique is the solutions…

To determine which of the most popular paper towel brands such as Bounty and Marcal would be the Quicker-Picker-Upper I conducted the following experiment during which I dipped 6in X 6in squares of paper towels into 100mL and measured the amount of water absorbed by the towels in 20 seconds. After averaging all 3 trials for the paper towel brands that I tested I arrived to the conclusion that the Bounty Cooking paper towel is the Quicker-Picker-Upper as it absorbed about 21.8mL of the water in 20 seconds as oppose to Marcal (19.2mL) Stop & Shop (13.8mL) and the generic school brand (1.8mL).…

INT Task 3: Toilet Paper Absorbency Project Design Plan Problem Statement: Absorbency of toilet paper is found in many aspects when it comes to choosing the right toilet paper. When choosing toilet paper people base their decisions on many factors. Those factors include price, name brand, availability, quantity for the price, and even media deliverance (i.e. commercials) of toilet paper. Although these factors are of key importance, what about the absorbency of toilet paper? This experiment is conducted in the hopes of showing three different levels of absorbency. Testable Question: How does the saturation of three different brands of toilet paper compare? Literature Review: Based off two previous scientific experiments that were found, the results mirrored each other. Both experiments took multiple sheets of toilet paper and applied a controlled amount of liquid to each brand, in which the absorbency was recorded based off the brand. What was found is that the more expensive brand required less sheets to be used in terms of absorbency against the off brand toilet papers that were used in the experiments. It would appear that although the better toilet paper is more expensive, it is a better value due to having to use fewer sheets. (Dunbar, 2008) (Katwith6lives, 2010). Experimental Design The experiment will use three different brands of toilet paper. They are Charmin, White Cloud, and a local store brand paper. The experiment will start off by using fifteen sheets of each brand, that will be placed on top of saran wrap, and apply 3mL of green dyed water to each stack of toilet paper. After allowing the saturated toilet paper stacks to sit for 15 seconds observations will be made as to the amount of green dyed water that has accumulated on the saran wrap that the stacks of toilet paper have been sitting on. If any water is present measurements will be taken using a syringe to show the amount of water that was left behind from the stacks of paper by suctioning up…

While doing research on how to best design my paper towel experiment, I came across two other experiments that were relevant to mine. The first was a diaper absorbency experiment conducted by Vanessa W. in 1999 to determine which brand of diaper was the most absorbent. She used the same concept I will be using in my experiment by using water to test absorbency and measuring the amount of water left after each test. The second was a paper towel absorbency experiment conducted by Samantha P. in 2000. This experiment is very similar to the one I will be conducting, except she used a different measuring tool and method than I will be.…
