Overweight and obese children are a major problem in the United States and the rates are unfortunately rising, especially in children. Obesity is the leading cause for health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, gallstones, depression, anxiety, poor academic performance, and many other long-term health problems especially if obesity occurs early in life. I believe this is a social issue because the major causes of obesity are diet and lifestyle. In America, the diet consists of fried and greasy foods such as fast foods, the lifestyle lacks enough physical activities that are necessary to increase the metabolism and prevent weight gain that leads to obesity. The children of the United States spend much more time watching TV or playing video games than doing activities that include physical exercise, such as sports, running, hiking, biking, or even just walking.…

The more time children spend watching television, the more their body fat percentage increases. This is contributing to the increase in childhood obesity. (Jordan) In addition to the messages children are receiving from advertisements, evidence shows that while children are engaged in television or gaming activities they are more likely to snack more frequently, contributing to the increase in childhood obesity. Although the amount of time spent on watching television and playing videogames is disturbing, what really is at question is why. Why are children less active? Changes in the family have occurred over the last 20 years. There are more 2 income families and more single parent households. These changes can lead to more children being left without supervision and little planned activities. Safety also plays a role in the amount physical activity that children are involved in. Children in urban environments may not have areas that are free of traffic or an area of protected space in which to play on. In addition neighborhoods in urban areas may be riddled with crime. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services). Not only does crime and traffic impede the ability for children to enjoy outside physical activity as they had in the past, it also impacts them from obtaining low impact exercise such as that which could be gained from walking to school or to a friend’s…

Scientific method is a process that outlines a number of principles for answering questions. Many people in day-to-day situations use scientific method. For example, if I were to try to start my car and it doesn 't work, my first reaction would be to think of reason my car is not starting. This is just a brief example of scientific method. The principles in Scientific method should be used in an orderly manner to answer your questions. Scientific method lets people research true things as well as false. There is no guessing when using Scientific method it is completely natural. From my military career I can say from experience that Integrity is one of our Five Army Values. I like to think the Scientific method is having entire integrity, due to the fact that it is this method of discovery, and justification for that discovery, which must be accomplished entirely with integrity (www.scientificmethod.co.uk).…

What causes childhood obesity? Is it parents? Teachers? Children themselves? No matter the cause it is a problem and it needs to be taken care of and taken care of fast. The cause of obesity occurs when the input of energy (food) is more than the output of energy (activity). For example, 3,500 calories equals one pound, so if a child goes over that by 50 to 100 calories a day that means a 5 to 10 pound weight gain in about a year. If that small imbalance between the two energies continues there will be a very big weight gain (Johnson, 2005). There is a difference between obese and overweight, obese is the upper half of being overweight. A doctor will diagnose a child as obese if that child is greater than 90 percent for weight for height or if that child is greater than 95th percentile of body mass index (BMI), age and sex specific (Kendall).…
