The ANA has developed standards of practice for the profession of nursing. They are assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation and evaluation. The registered nurse would assess the patient and make a diagnosis based on that information. The nurse would then try to think of some outcomes and form a plan for that patient. Once you have a plan the nurse needs to implement the plan for a desired outcome. The nurse would then
want to evaluate to see what progress was made for the patient. A nurse also has to be competent to perform their job duties. They need to be able to demonstrate competency for certain skills and have a certain level of knowledge. Nurses are responsible for maintaining a level of competency and knowing their limitations.
