How does Scout come of age in To Kill A Mockingbird? In this book “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee we talk about how Scout comes of age in chapter 24. The chapter takes place in a house during a tea party party. Scout admires the way Miss Maudie carries the plate with tea with grace. “ I admired the ease and grace with which she handled loads of dainty things ”(p.261). Scout is usually fighting and getting down right dirty instead of staying in the house and lady things. One can see the irony in this situation because before all this crazy lady things she used to be a Tomboy.
Scout feels nervous and thinks that she should be a bit more cautious with herself. “ I was wearing my pink sunday dress, shoes, and a petticoat
and reflected that if i spill my tea on the dress then Calpurnia would have to wash it for tomorrow” (p.262). Scout is usually outside being a big bully and wanting to fight everyone and she used to wear overalls before she wore a pink dress and was a nervous wreck. One can see the mood in this situation because she used to be a big angry bully but now she is nervous.
Scout realizes that she made a big mistake. “ I hadn't meant to be funny, but the ladies laughed. My cheeks grew hot as I realized my mistake, but Miss Maudie looked gravely down at me. She never laughed at me unless I meant to be funny”(p.263). Scout is usually making troubles but in this part of the chapter she is nervous and scared she is nervous because she doesn't want to spill her tea, she is scared because Miss Maudie didn’t laugh. One can see the internal conflict in this part of the chapter because in this situation she is scared because Miss Maudie didn’t laugh with the other ladies.
