Dubose. But Mrs. Dubose impacts them by insults. She insults Scout by saying “you’ll grow up waiting on tables... at the O.K. Cafe” (Lee 135). This gives Scout an extreme amount of animosity against Mrs. Dubose. She next infuriates Jem by saying, “Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for niggers” (Lee 135). But after Jem attacks her flowers, Atticus tells Jem that his punishment will be to read to her every Saturday. Over his time with her, he realizes that she has bravely been fighting off an addiction for months. He learned that this was her goal for her life. And as she died, Jem realized that it was him that helped her fight it off. This situation taught Jem that you can be a hero to the people you hate the most. Mrs. Dubose was a person who insulted and yelled the Finch name. But she was struggling more than Jem knew. So Mrs. Dubose secret struggle taught Jem that everything isn’t as it seems. Boo Radley is the neighborhood darkness. He tries to hide, but that creates some huge curiosity the Finch kids. Boo has created a mission for them. In Chapter 28 when Bob Ewell attacks them at night, “somebody yanked Mr. Ewell down..” (Lee 361) When Scout saw that somebody, she realized it was Boo Radley that saved their lives. In this quote, Boo Radley has been revealed to be a kind, caring, compassionate person. In the contrast to his real person, it is shown that not all is what it seems. Through Boo, Scout and Jem learned that adults can be as loving as children. This lesson allows them not live on a first judgement. As people are subject to judgement, and it is our job to redeem that in both ourselves and others. And Boo has re-earned respect of all who was in that room. Throughout all of the quotes and experiences, they have learned that not all is what it seems, care for those who don't for you, and caring and compassion is an amazing virtue.
