Assignment Outline
Final Synthesis Essay
In place of a final exam, the English department now offers a final synthesis assignment that asks you to reflect on the scope and sequence of your learning and the concepts and texts that we have used. * At its most basic level, a literary synthesis involves combining two or more texts. * Combining must be done in a meaningful way and the final essay must generally be thesis-driven. * “Synthesis” commonly refers to the identification of particular themes or traits observed in at least two texts and presenting material from each text under the umbrella of this theme * Synthesis searches for links between materials for the purpose of constructing a thesis or theory.
For this final essay you will begin with Macbeth as your starting point to derive your initial general theme and then link it to a minimum of two other texts from during the year (these can be short stories, novel studies, poetry, and thematic essays)
You will use the supplied Macbeth Final Synthesis Template to brainstorm and create your first draft of your written work. This will then be peer edited, and then turned into a final written draft.
I’ve listed some links to student examples on our class website for you to refer to for further inspiration.
