Assignment #3: First Draft of the Final Essay
Context
The assignments for this course have been designed to guide students through the various steps of writing a social science research paper at the university level. Each assignment targets a specific set of skills that students will need to learn and use during the essay-writing process. Written course assignments will eventually culminate in the writing of one research paper which will be due at the end of the year. Writing a research essay is a highly technical process involving many components and strict formatting rules. For this assignment, students will focus on developing critical writing, organizational and formatting skills by completing a first draft of their final research essay.
Goals
Based on their work from the previous two course assignments, students will write a first draft of their essay which: 1. Provides detailed framework for the entire essay, clearly illustrating the main issues, research and organization for the final essay.
2. Provides a complete introduction, conclusion and bibliography
3. Has approximately 1/3 of the body of the final essay completed.
Writing a First Draft
Students display many different approaches to essay-writing. For instance, some attempt to write a complete essay from start to finish in only one draft, while others prefer to write a series of drafts. Some prefer to write an introduction and conclusion first and write the body of the essay last, while others prefer the exact opposite approach. While each of these approaches has its advantages and disadvantages, virtually every student can benefit from constructing a detailed outline of their essay which includes a clear topic or thesis statement, the main points and research to be discussed and a logical organization for these points.
