Where Red Pollard, Tom Smith, and Charles Howard stepped in to take the reins, no pun intended, of Sea biscuit's training marked the beginning of a long a difficult path for the champion and those around him. Red Pollard, a short man who failed at both boxing and being a jockey, became the jockey of Sea biscuit. Tom Smith was a horse breaker who traveled across the land to break mustangs for others. Charles Howard, a car dealer where he made his large fortune by selling the not yet popular automobile, was also a part of Sea biscuits rise to fame and glory. Trained by the three men, Sea biscuit turned his career around for the better. As an unlikely trio, nobody saw them being successful like they would soon become. Training Sea biscuit was a remarkable task due to the horse’s stubbornness. Along with being stubborn and small, he packed a large amount of hidden potential. The three who took it upon themselves to train this unlikely champion, saw something inside of Sea biscuit that they treasured. As a result of the things they saw, they worked with the horse tirelessly and put a tremendous amount of effort to mold him into a champion. The men's’ efforts, along with the spirit of their horse, turned Sea biscuit into the horse that won a series of victorious and allowed him to become one of the greatest performs the sport has ever seen. “Sea biscuit” is a book that really captures its audience and pictures an underdog perfectly.
This story, one of my favorite tales, is about grit and willpower and how anything can be accomplished through perseverance. Around the midway point of the book you receive the depiction of America during World War II and are shown how a horse generated more news and popular than the president Roosevelt and Hitler himself. My feedback towards this book is positive everybody who wants to hear about how hard work really pays off should read this. It was not just the heart of the horse that achieved greatness, but also the heart of the three men who put everything they had into the animal. Very similar to the film, the book contained exactly what I was expecting to find. An amazing story about an underdog who fights the odds and overcomes the difficulty set in front of him to achieve greatness has always been a great type of story to read. This type of theme is used repeatedly and can be found with difficulty, but it is so interesting to me because of the time setting and
characters.
