INFORMATION REPORT ON THE ARCTIC TERN
Name: Arctic Tern
Features: Arctic Terns are medium sized birds. They have a length of 33cm to 39cm and a wingspan of 76cm to 85cm. They are mainly grey and white plumaged, with a red beak and feet. They have a white forehead, a black nape and crown, plus white cheeks. The grey mantle is 305mm, and the scapulae is fringed brown and some tipped white. The higher wing is grey with a white leading edge, and the collar is completely white, as is the rump. The deeply sharped tail is whitish, with grey outer webs. The place near the ears is black.
Habitat: Arctic Terns inhabit rocky coastal islands, coastal beaches, and marshes with plenty supplies of fish crustaceans. They breed in rocky gravelling islands, barrier beaches, gravel bars, and occasionally in marshes and bogs. In winter, Arctic Terns inhabit pack ice in open water and near-shore icebergs in the Antarctic Region.
Diet: The Arctic Tern is a seabird and many of them feed on ocean surfaces. Arctic Terns diet is krill, forage fish, and squid. They also eat small invertebrates. From 1 to 2 years old they eat species such as herring, cod, sandlances and capelin. Apart from small invertebrates they eat amphipods and crabs. Sometimes, these birds also eat molluscs, marine worms, or berries. And on their Northern breeding grounds they eat insects.
Interesting Facts: The Arctic Tern travels more than a million miles on its global journeys. Arctic Terns are very protective of their colonies. If a predator walks into their colony they swoop down to attack the creature with their sharp beaks, which they can easily draw blood. This bird can hover in mid-air. The Arctic Tern almost never lands and will eat during mid-flight.
Why I like this bird: As you all may not be expecting this, but the Arctic Tern has always been my favourite bird! It is my favourite bird because it can travel a million miles and can retaliate back
