Second Circle Of Hell In The Divine Comedy

In the Divine Comedy Dante discusses the various levels of hell. They are categorized based on sins of incontinence, sins of fraud, and sins of violence. Lust and sins of adultery would be categorized as sins of incontinence and would thus be placed in the second circle of hell. This paper will discuss how my ex-boyfriend would be placed in this circle of hell. I began dating my ex-boyfriend, Alejandro, about three years ago. When my friends and family first met him they constantly told me they did not believe he was a good guy. I did not believe them. It was not until I ran into him and another girl kissing and on a date about six months after we started dating. We broke up but we ended up getting back together and that was another horrible mistake on my part. He had told me he was not talking to this girl anymore but just two months later I came home and caught him in bed with the girl. I found out later that he had begun talking to this girl at around the same time he began talking to me. He had not only cheated on me but he had also cheated on multiple other girls before me. To my friends and family, he has become known as the cheating boyfriend I once dated. Because of this, he would be placed in the second
circle of hell. The second circle of hell holds sinners of lust.
These are the people who indulged in the destructive force of possessive sexual desire. The people who were unfaithful to their partners in life. Alejandro acted, multiple times, on his misguided desires and because of that he would end up in the second circle of hell. He may have committed other acts of sins but because he is best known for his infidelity he would end up in the circle of lust. Dante discusses how people such as Helen of Troy, Paris, and Cleopatra all ended up in this circle because of the lustful decisions they made in life. Alejandro was extremely unfaithful in his life and he made the same types of decisions as Helen of Troy and Paris therefore, he would be sent to this circle of
hell. My ex-boyfriend had problems with being in a loyal relationship. He turned away from the attraction of the whole beauty of a person and was misguided by his sexual desires for another. According to Dante’s theories of damnation, Alejandro would be in this circle of lust. He would forever be blown around by the buffeting whirlwinds of hell, symbolizing the restlessness of a person led by a desire for misguided pleasures.
