(Second) Reflection Paper
Once again, I completed a speech for my communications class. The type of speech we were required to do was an informative speech, but what made it different, from the last one, was the use of technology. In this paper I will talk about what I well, ways to improve, and the overall experience.
My first main point was what I did well. For my speech about Ronald Reagan, I felt that I was informative with my topic. I made sure to read a book about his life and some web journal entries. Also, I picked out neat tidbits of information and some unusual stuff that the average American does not know. I did add information that people did know so the whole thing was not totally new. With getting all the information, I made sure I added a good attention getter, something interesting for the class. Because I had a political figure, I wanted a fact that was relatable and funny. The fact that Ronald Reagan liked Jelly Belly’s and that Jelly Belly made the blueberry flavor just for him, hit it home.
My second main point is ways to improve. In my last paper, I needed to make eye contact. I successfully did that this time, but this time I said, “Um” a lot of times. Maybe while I was practicing I was saying it, or I got really nervous and did not know what to do with the empty silence. Either way I need to find a way to change it. Also, I forgot my credibility statement. That is a big one because that means I did not give anyone a reason why they should believe, or listen to, a word I said. The instructor had me say it at the end of class, but it would have had a better effect on my speech in the beginning. I think for my next speech I should just take a breath and relax. Maybe then I will not forget my credibility and it will out the um’s at a minimum.
My third main point is the overall feeling I had during my speech. It wasn’t as scary as it was the last time. Plus, it was fun telling my classmate’s information
