Sectional Crisis
Sectional Crisis Leading to the civil war there were a plethora of things that impacted the unity of the nation as a whole. Two major events that contributed to this were the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas Nebraska Act. Both of these events changed the relationship of the nation in many ways. The Compromise of 1850 was a compromise that stated California would be admitted as a free state, the slave auction would end in Washington D.C, settlers of Mexico and Utah would decide whether it would be considered a free or slave state through popular sovereignty, and lastly it stated that the Fugitive Slave Act would be enacted. These four things had an extreme affect on the national unity. This compromise made the southerners furious, and not only did they feel like they didn’t have a say, they felt like the north was embarrassed of them. The south felt as though it was unfair that the north got to choose that California as a whole was a free state, without consent from them, especially since almost half of that land should have belonged to them following the Missouri Compromise. What gave the north the right to make the decisions that will ultimately affect the nation as a whole? The south was built off of slavery, slavery auctions, and anything that was related to slavery and when Washington, D.C, our nations capitol banned slave auctions from their area the southerners felt very down, almost as though they were an embarrassment to the nation. When the nation found out that the settlers themselves, of Mexico and Utah got to decide whether the territories would be admitted as slave or free states extremists from both the north and south made their way to these territories with intentions of admitting the new territories in their favor. Lastly, was the Fugitive Slave act which the south was actually benefiting from; in the beginning. For once, the north didn’t benefit and they were furious, they didn’t think it was their responsibility to capture run away slaves and return them to their slave owners. After a while the north just fully ignored the fugitive slave act, which once again made the south furious. Basically, the Compromise of 1850 benefited the north greatly, and made the south furious, ultimately contributing to the disunity of the north and south as one whole nation. A second event that had an enormous impact on the national unity was the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which was the opening of lands for settlement. The initial purpose for this act was to open up thousands of farms, and to make the land feasible for a Midwestern railroad, all planned by the one and only Steven Douglas. The only twist was the new territory was going to be admitted as a free or slave state through popular sovereignty. Therefore, this act affected the nation’s unity greatly because by allowing the territory to be admitted as a free or slave state through popular sovereignty went against the Missouri Compromise, which had been holding the nation together for more than thirty years. Due to this, the Missouri Compromise had to be repealed, ultimately opening land above the 36°30 line to popular sovereignty, resulting in outraged northerners. News of this caused pro-slavery and anti-slavery people to flood the territory, leaving the north fearful of the spread of slavery. Political disunity was one of the things affected the most because almost every northern Whig opposed the bill while almost every southern Whig voted in favor of it. Most of the southern Whigs made their way into a democratic party while the northerners and other anti-slavery people reorganized themselves into a republican party; the party of Abraham Lincoln who was running for president at that time. Both the north and the south created there own ‘capitals’ and ‘constitutions’ going against the constitution that got them to where they are today, because each of them wanted to live life the way they wanted. Northerners and Southerners were becoming overly stubborn at this time. The act was just adding fuel to the fire, and animosity between the north and south just got worse over time. This Kansas-Nebraska act led to the series of violent political conferences between anti-slavery abolitionist extremists and pro-slavery extremists; an even known as Bleeding Kansas. Although there was a large amount of tension between the north and south over slavery, land, and what would be considered slave or free prior to the Kansas Nebraska Act, it was just the icing on the cake. It caused the south to still question why the north believes they can make all of the decisions for the nation, and it left the north outraged by repealing a compromise that has benefited them greatly for over thirty years. In conclusion, there were many events that had impacted the national unity of our nation for years but the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansa-Nebraska Act were two very important events. They caused the south to feel as though they had no voice and always got the short end of the stick, while it gave the north more reason to be against the spread of slavery. The people of the north and south became extremely stubborn over time, and wanted everything to be there way. In their eyes there was no compromising, and if something didn’t go their way they would just ignore it. Each of these events increased tension and hatred between the north and south ultimately dividing the nation into two sections with completely different views, ways of life, and attitudes.

There were also personal disputes in the time period. Arguments led into admitting California as a free state. Southerners did not agree with this opportunity and wanted California as a Southern Slave State. Other arguments between the North and South were the formations of governments in the South without limitations on slavery, giving orders to Texas to withdraw the land claims in New Mexico, evening out Texas by having the federal government to strike the state’s debts, allowing slavery to last in Washington D.C., banning slave trade in Washington D.C., passing a more successful fugitive slave law, and limiting Congress from sliding into the interstate slave…

The North and South in the nineteenth century were different in lifestyle and morale as well as economy. The north had a booming industrial economy while in the South, cotton was king. Because of this, congress was continuously addressing controversial matters and providing answers that did not satisfy either one side or both. The early 1800s were full of the North and the South making many attempts at reconciliation that just fell short. Among those were the Missouri Compromise of 1820, and the Great Compromise of 1850. Other tempestuous attempts led to the Tariff/Nullification Controversy, anti slavery debates in congress, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Whether it was one side or the other, there was always someone to oppose - and in some cases, defy - the laws put in place, which eventually led to the succession of the southern states and the Civil War.…

There are numerous long term and short term events that caused the Civil War to occur. From the long term impacts of slavery and the Missouri Compromise to the short term effects of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Bleeding Kansas, the Civil War was caused mainly by one significant step. Although Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Dred Scott had an impact on the civil war, it was not as significant as the election of 1860. The election was the most important event because it lead to the secession of South Carolina and also because of the drastic differences in ideology between the north and the south. The Dred Scott decision would lead to the ratification of the 14th amendment.*…

The tensions caused by the differing beliefs were slowly built up since the American Revolution. Slavery, being an established practice since America’s independence and a cause of the Civil War, was not an issue at the time, but was also left unresolved by the Founding Fathers. As time passed on, and as morals evolved, the views towards slavery changed as well. The original belief of slaves as nonhuman/property slowly progressed into slaves being lesser-humans. As beliefs changed, and the acceptance of slaves grew positively in the North, the basis of government became more and more unstable. With differing bases of thought, America’s ability to stay unified couldn’t happen with government trying to please both opposing sides, like found in the Compromise of 1850 (Doc 1). The Compromise attempted to alleviate the slavery situation that arose when California fulfilled the requirements to become an official state. The admittance of California threw off the Great Compromise and the Missouri Compromise. To counter that change, the Compromise made the New Mexico and Utah Territories free to become slave states via allowing them popular sovereignty. To add to the South-positive compromises, the Fugitive Slave Laws (Doc 3) were also employed, thus “balancing” the additions to both territories. The decision was technically correct for the event, as it settled the tension from the California, but in doing so, left the issue of slavery un-addressed and even strengthened slavery. The Compromise of 1850 only brought “compromise” in the regard of the free-slave states ratio, but greatly supported…

The Compromise of 1850 was made to settle issues between North and South about territory and slavery that was caused by the Mexican-American War. There were five bills made. The first bill was that California was a free state. The second state was that Texas would be paid compensation by the government for giving California and New Mexico up. The third bill was that New Mexico was a new state without any specific prohibition of slavery. The fourth bill was that there would be no slave trade in Washington DC. The fifth bill was that if a slave ran away, people would have to chase after it no matter what. Even though this was a compromise, the North and South didn’t really like it that much. Texas especially didn’t like it because they lost a lot of territory.…

Sectionalism played a major role in causing the Civil War. The North and South became very divided over slavery, which was the main cause of the Civil War. For example, the North wanted to completely abolish slavery because the people believed it was morally wrong. On the other hand, the South wanted to keep slavery because it was the only way their economy would survive, plus they thought they were morally wrong. The split between the two sides began way before the Civil War, over slavery, during the Constitutional Conventions, but eventually grew deeper as the country grew.…

The Confederate economy was for the most part agrarian while the Union followed along the lines of an industrialized economy. These different economies fostered different lifestyles that led to different political and social views. These situations further enhanced the tension between the Union and the Confederates. Along with the other issues the issue of slavery and the rights of the states was the primary cause of the Civil War. Slavery was deeply encouraged into Confederate society and tied to the agrarian economy. The issue of whether or not states had the right to choose if they wanted to have slaves or not was debated by Congress. The Compromise of 1850 helped in adding the tension between the states. It first made California part of the United States. Then it gave the new territories but not the states, the right to decide whether or not they should have slaves. The Compromise of 1850 made many of the Union states, who wanted to have greater political control,…
