Naturally all these changes show up in recent sediments. And these sediments are quite different from pre year 1800 sediment layers. Interestingly there’s some speculation that humans started having a major impact on Earth much earlier, about 8000 years ago. That’s when agriculture was becoming widespread. Early farmers started clearing forests and livestock produced a lot of extra methane. But I want to stress this is just a hypothesis. The idea that early humans could have had such a major effect, well I’m just not sure we can compare it with the industrial age. Geologists in the far future will be able to examine the sediment being laid down today, whereas right now we can say that yes, human impact on the Earth is clear: It’ll be future researchers who have a better perspective and will be able to really draw a line between the Holocene and the Anthropocene epics.

The industrial revolution was undoubtedly one of the most important events in the formation of the contemporary world. Sparked by the agricultural revolution of 1750 and 1880, the industrial revolution would transform Britain, and later the whole western world, into powerhouses of metal work, mining and industry. Beginning in England in around 1760, the revolution would continue well into the nineteenth century and bring around crucial inventions, such as steam pumps and railways. Crucially, the industrial revolution saw a switch from the use of wood and other bio-fuels such as charcoal for fuel, to coal for the very first time on a wide scale. It was this development that allowed the revolution to grow and spread across the whole world. Without the widespread mining of coal, the revolution simply could not have sustained itself. British lands were rich with coal, and there was a seemingly endless supply with millions of tons being processed every single year since the very beginning of the industrial revolution.…

Simon L. Lewis and Mark. A. Maslin explore the various reasoning’s behind the proposed epoch of the Anthropocene in “Defining the Anthropocene”. They study the factors that could contribute to the referral of the present as the Anthropocene epoch, such as the periods of time in history in which the “functioning of Earth as a system” (172), has been affected due to human actions. Their goal is to “constrain the number of possible start dates [of the Anthropocene], highlight areas requiring research, and assist in moving towards an evidence based decision” (172). Lewis and Maslin use the persuasive strategies of logos by providing plenty of facts from cited sources in order to provide reasoning based on the background information on human geology. Although these rhetorical strategies are used, they do not provide a concise point on what the authors opinions are, rather simply stating facts and considering both sides of the argument without actually confirming whether they believe the epoch should be established.…

In the scientific community, climate change is practically undeniable and its universal importance not trivial. However, in respects to a new concept called the Anthropocene, debate has waged over the struggle of its classification. In the article The “Anthropocene” epoch: Scientific decision or political statement?, California State University geological sciences professor Stanley Finney and U.S. Geological Survey geologist Lucy Edwards unmask the current representation of the Anthropocene and its implications to the International Chronostratigraphic Chart if recognized as a geological unit. Finney and Edwards examine the basis of the Anthropocene’s validity and lead the reader, or place the idea in the mind, to potential political and social…

The moment the earth was made was when history was first conceived. The introduction tells us about the making of planet Earth, which sets up the scene for the arrival of the Foragers. The history of man consists of three primary eras: the Era of Foragers, the Agrarian Era, and lastly, the Modern Era. The Era of Foragers, also known as the Paleolithic Era, lasted the longest out of the other two eras. Historians must piece together this era with fossils and such, since there was no written evidence. Foraging; the act of food collecting, or living off the land, was humanity's first step on this long journey or civilization. As time ticked, agriculture was discovered. The advancement of farming techniques allowed for more efficiency in producing food; population increases resulted of the more abundant flow of food and nutrition. This new way of living would be the Agrarian Era. Unlike the people before their time, the Agrarians farmed off their land and settled down. Lastly, came the Modern Era. The era in which we live in today. This era consists of lots of technological, and industrial advances. This Fleeting World is a spectacular representation of the world's journey. Some may ask what the Anthropocene is. Before this moment, I had never heard of it. The Anthropocene is very important because it is able to show just how humans have impacted the earth, and how we have changed it. As humans, we are pushing the wildlife into smaller areas as we create new homes, and disrupt their habitat. The earth is facing its sixth extinction, and studies show that humans are to blame. This does not mean every single animal species has suffered a loss of 25%. Some are impacted more than others. Humans are to blame, as the killing of animals, and change of habitat are two major factors in the decline of species. Not only are animals being killed, but we are also polluting the air we breathe. Since population has grown to such heights, the Human species now has more power than ever. Various cultures and ethnicities are spread across every corner of the globe. As one of the only species covering such a large percentage of the planet, we are therefore In charge of it. Mass communication also allows us to communicate and organize amongst ourselves. Universities and secondary forms of education have provided the base for individuals to proceed to conquer great things. Public and private research outside of education institutions has allowed for countless technological advances. With so much technology, the world is truly ours. Advances in chemistry and biology have led to a greater understanding in our planet. This is why the era of massive population, communication, education and technology truly make this the era of the human, or anthropence.
